Steering jacket removal 56 Bird
 

Standard shift. I have new chrome parts to install. Got the wheel,turn signal switch and mechanism off. Now how to get outer jacket parts off. ??:confused:
I don't want to bust anything.

It's been about 30 years since I took mine apart but I thing you're referring to the outer collar and inner sleeve. If I remember correctly the parts unscrewed from the column. Then once the outer parts are off you can see screws that hold the inner parts together.

If you need I can lay the parts out to take close up pics to show what they look like. Unfortunately mine is a '55 and yours is a'56 and they are a little different. Really though, it's kind of straight forward and not difficult. You might find some rusted screws or something like that because after all..... it IS 61 years old and you don't know if it has ever been apart since new.

It looks like you have to remove screw 50629-S before trying to remove the inner sleeve 3509.

It looks like i have all the screws out. i have turned the ribbed sleeve off towards the dash and I think the turn signal housing is just stuck on the bare steel tube. i may have to make some kind of puller that will distribute the pressure.

I tried a puller and reached a point that if I pulled a little harder it would either come off or shatter. Trusting my instinct.. I quit and put it back together, I'll let someone else try if they want to!

I'd offer a suggestion but I've never been past the horn ring, to fix a temperamental horn switch.

I have somewhat the same problem. I have reciepts for new steering column parts, the previous owner bought, and presumably installed, but since my buying the car, I cannot twist the cover, and move the wheel in or out.

Thanks to the above, now I have learned that the cover twists toward the dashboard. That's a starting point, at least. I have always been afraid to twist it too hard, and break something.

It appears to be a collet type moveable joint with a slip joint in the steering shaft to allow the telescopic movement of the inner and outer tubes.
