mini-starter
 

I have converted my A to 12 volts. I am planning to install one of the light weight mini starters that requires a solenoid to be added. If anyone has installed one, I would appreciate describing where you put the solenoid and the starter switch, and what type switch you recommend.

Check such starters out on ebay. The one that I got is high torque gear drive...with solenoid built in. Nice unit.

It may just be me but I like the look of the original starter. Have one converted to 12 volts, it will probably be cheaper in the long run.

you can utilize the 6 volt, been using the 6 volt with a 12 volt conversion, you just cant continually energize the motor as it will damage it, the engine should start within 5 seconds, been using this application on my 28 Tudor for 20 years with no issue.
+ or - ground, the motor does not care, from my experience. The purest may disagree but that's cool.

ive converted to 12v neg ground aswell on my lil speedster. did nothing to the starter. works fine but when rebuild time comes , if it comes, ill rebuild to 12v specs

GEEZ, these comments and suggestions are hilarious! Abbie asks if anyone has installed one of these mini gear drive starters, --and if so where did they install the aux. solenoid. He did not ask where to get one (--he already has made the purchase ;)) nor did he ask if he should convert to 12 volts as he has already done this.

If you know the vehicle he is working on, (--which I do because I have seen it on tour) it is ALREADY set-up with 12 volts due to them needing air conditioning several years ago. Since he is now wanting to convert the faulty starter to solenoid use instead of foot activation, ...and he is limited by his mechanical capabilities, it seems it is best to install this new style of starter. In addition, this smaller mini-starter will be handy for him to install himself due to limited space in the proximity of the starter because the A/C Dryer was installed in that area. So it really is of no benefit for him to reconsider converting his present starter to 12 volts as he already had that. Now that you know the entire scenario, I spoke with Mr. Prince and shared with him that he should not install an aux. solenoid, and how he could wire the starter solenoid with a hidden push-button switch.

I'm with Y-Block. If you want a quick answer call a mechanic or someone who knows your car.

Many of us old guys have a lot of time on our hands and we enjoy the discussion and repartee on this Forum. I don't post a lot but I do spend time every day reading and enjoying posts. I've learned a lot from all the comments from the Barners even when they stray from the topic. If the OP doesn't provide background on their car, people tend to give more involved answers.

I have the gear reduction starter that Snyder’s sells. It has a built in solenoid. I also have a key start ignition switch. All of which works beautifully. Obviously I am not concerned with originality but rather functionality.

I am installing a Snyder's gear reduction starter in my rebuild. I had 3 "modern" solenoids explode on my starter that was converted to 12V. Boy what a pain in the rear to get those things out. tired of doing the same thing over and over. Sure they aren't stock looking but others in the local club have had excellent experience with them. I want to make this car my "touring car" and will keep the others stock.
