Re: Stainless steel '36 sedan Seen this before, too bad they didn’t make the production cars all stainless, we would all have a little less work to do on restorations.

Re: Stainless steel '36 sedan Saw one of them in person many years ago and it was not polished and I don't think any of the original ones were (just a brushed surface like the Delorean)
A couple of interesting things like the chewed up screw on the windshield crank handle. And possible variable speedometer gear ratio control. https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/attac...5&d=1513106653 https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/attac...6&d=1513106653 |
Re: Stainless steel '36 sedan There will be one on display at the Early Ford V-8 Foundation Museum in Auburn, Indiana when the new building is completed. A very complete collection of '36 Fords has been donated to the museum.

Re: Stainless steel '36 sedan These cars had a carbon steel floor pan that did not last any better than the floor pans in the regular production '36 Fords.

Re: Stainless steel '36 sedan I live in Tinley Park Illinois. There was a Stainless 36 located for years,in Orland Park Illinois. It was owned by a dentist who pioneered stainless use in teeth fillings. I found out that it was less than ten miles from my house, stored in a horse barn. But this is one of those things where "Everyone" else but me knew about it. I never did find out where it ended up.

Re: Stainless steel '36 sedan I saw one of the missing (Cleveland) cars over 50 years ago when I worked at a Sunoco station on the far east side of Cleveland. It was really bright, but not polished like that one. It drove by the station a couple of times, then I never saw it again. I asked my dad who was a Ford mechanic, he knew of it but didn't know who owned it. Paul Selfe.

Re: Stainless steel '36 sedan There's one on display at the Crawford auto-aviation museum in Cleveland. Also a later model thunderbird and a Lincoln, both in stainless. Pretty cool museum.

Re: Stainless steel '36 sedan I remember back in 1965 or so a friend took me to a woods in Marblehead Ohio to show me 2 old "junk" cars he found. One was a stainless steel Lincoln 40ish & the other a Pierce Arrow. The Pierce had a tree growing between the bumper & the body. A few years later they both vanished & no one knew anything about where they went. !!! mike

Re: Stainless steel '36 sedan These cars were built by Allegheny Ludlum Specialty Steel producer in Pittsburgh, Pa. They were given to their salesmen to hit the road and show all the virtues of stainless steel. They built these Fords, a few Lincoln's of the fifties and some Thunderbird's of the early sixties. Their is a 36 in the Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh.

Re: Stainless steel '36 sedan I think it was Allegheny that had a hand in making stainless Autocar road tractors for Edgecomb steel distributers in the early '60's.
|
Re: Stainless steel '36 sedan The AACA Museum had the Thunderbird on display a few years ago. The lines were not as crisp as mild steel. I guess the SS is harder to stamp out.

Re: Stainless steel '36 sedan 1 Attachment(s)
I've seen three of these six stainless steel 36's in the last 10 years. They are pretty amazing cars to see in person and the one that's highly polished will hurt your eyes a bit if you look at it too long in bright lighting.
