Grease fitting won't take grease

Trying to grease spring shackles. I have 2 that won't take grease. Took the fitting out and grease goes through. Is there a way to clean out the shackle so it will accept grease? I have a can of blaster standing by. Thanks, David

I have one of these in my shop to clear the path. This tool will do the job most of the time. If it won't then "Heat" as noboD said previously.

You fill the tool with some light solvent or oil, place the tool over the zerk and tap the tool with a hammer. The high pressure created will typically clear the zerk and path.

Good Day!

Take your car to an auto repair garage with old fashion high pressure grease gun system.

Really gets into places you need grease. Down side, grease jobs aren’t $2.00 anymore.

Enjoy.

on heavy equipment where dirt gets packed into them on the arm I spin them out and use a wire and picks to clean out the debris.

Raise the Model A at the front frame a couple of inches; just enough to relieve the weight from the shackle pins. This opens the channel for the flow of grease. Also the proper way to grease king pin bushings. If this was done properly in the past, the passages will be clear and negate the need for fancy tools etc. If this doesn't work then disassemble, clean and rebuild as necessary. Sometimes the hard way is the easy way.

the repro shackles and bushings don't have the lube channels cut into them unlike the originals, or at least the later versions of the originals.

I just bought one of these. Haven't had a chance to use it yet, but looks like it will do the job.

You can place a 4x4 across the frame under the front bumper frame horns and placing the jack between the horns raise the frame just enough to remove the weight of the car from the shackles. You will see movement as the tension is relieved. No need to raise it too much as Model A's don't like to have their axels hanging with the brake rods attached.

I've got an old greasemonkey's bar. It is like a wrecking bar, but longer and has a forked end. You can use it to pry on the axles, the linkages, the springs...whatever. If you get these components to move you can usually get them into a position where they will take grease.

if you do not wish to buy one of them fancy tools, you can try takeing out the zerk, then spraying in a good penetrating oil, but the zerk back in and then grease. gun preasure will push the pen oil in to soften up the hardened grease. leave it soak for a day if it wont go right ways, and it usually will go in my experiance
