48 Coupe B-4245 rear axle seals

In the green bible I see there is one B-4245 seal in each bell (left and right). Some kits have 3 seals. I cannot locate the third seal that I assume is for the pinion shaft. Can anyone tell me where the third seal goes and how to install it?
I do not have the rear axle apart yet.
Thank you.

Goes by the speedometer gear and bearing.

Torque Tube.

installs as the guys said in the torque tube from the u joint end. The driveshaft bearing and race need to be removed. There is a KRW tool to handle this. KRW SV246 if I remember correctly. Remember there is an intermediate bearing encased in rubber in the middle of the torque tube so it's just not as simple as knocking it out from the banjo end of things. Unless you have the proper tooling to replace or have someone local who's done it before I don't think I would necessarily worry about that one.

I have the tools and have done many, but most don't have access to them. It is one of the seals that won't hurt if you don't replace it. Grease that bearing very well when it's out and keep the u-joint lubed. You can also pull the speedo drive gear now and then and use a grease gun and pump some grease toward the back end which should workit's way to the bearing. That's about the best you can do on a regular maintenance.

BTW.. if rebuilding the rear axle thoroughly shine a light well and inspect the intermediate bearing in the torque tube. If the rubber is deteriorating you need to replace the bearing. Originals if you can find them are about $175-$250 and there is a replacement I believe from skip Haney in florida although I've always used originals.

Some of the members here have made their own inexpensive puller to remove the bearing race/sleeve that's located in the front of the torque tube. If you do a search you should be able to find previous posts on this with pictures on how they made this tool.

Here's one of the videos I was able to find showing how to remove and replace the sleeve.
Thank you John for pointing this out.
