Steering Housing End Plate woes 1 Attachment(s)
After dumping a quart or two of 600W on my garage floor via the bottom of my 2 tooth steering box, I decided it would be smart to upgrade to one of those modern plates with the tube that sits above the oil level. The car was redone in the 70s so I figured it probably didn't have one. While prying the old one off through layers of paint and gunk, I make the unfortunate discovery that it DID have one, and only after I had snapped it. It is smaller in OD than the new one (about .425 OD") and the new one won't fit in my steering box. Any ideas on what sort of strange box I have or where I can get a replacement for small ID tube end plate. There was also some kind of packing in there behind the plate, but no gasket sealing the plate well to the housing, and this is where the leak was. Does a plate with a tube and a proper gasket seal take the place of this packing?

Re: Steering Housing End Plate woes You could clean and braze the old one and make your own gasket.

Re: Steering Housing End Plate woes That is a very repairable item. Just braze it or silver solder it. Maintain alignment carefully. As to the packing, check the parts breakdown in the vendor catalogs. If it belongs there, it will be in the parts breakdown.

Re: Steering Housing End Plate woes Are you saying the bore of the steering shaft has a smaller ID, or the new part is wrong? They have sold a million of this endplate with the tube. Maybe you can check for burrs in your shaft. Maybe the part you bought was an anomaly.
