Any difference between 1950 Custom / Deluxe ?

A couple of newbie questions as I am shopping to buy a '50 Custom 4-door like my Dad had from 1955 to '59.

1) Any difference Custom and Custom Deluxe ? if so, what ?
2) Did the 3-speeds all have overdrive ?
3) I have only a couple of B&W photos of my Dad's car. He says it was like a Camel brown, Any idea which of the original colors that would have been ?
4) what color would the dash have been?
5) What would have the original upholstery have been ?
6) who are the "goto" guys for troubleshooting and restoration tips in the 49-50-51 Fords?

Finally, anyone got one like this to sell? My Dad's serial was B0SR158374, Anybody out there got it :) ? Gotta be as close to original as possible. Not looking for resto-mod.

Thanks

From the outside, there is not much difference. The main difference that I can see is the chrome trim on the front fender. On the Custom Deluxe, it has the nameplate that says "Custom" then becomes the beginning of the full length side chrome strip. On the cheaper Deluxe model, this short piece has no name and is the same shape as the rest of these chrome strip. There are other differences, as the Custom Deluxe received chrome wheel bands as standard, plus nicer upholstery. The Custom Deluxe also got chrome trim around the windscreen. In Australia, we only got the Custom Deluxe Fordor Sedan, plus a Coupe Ute. hope this helps. Mercman <><

I know that the printing is small, but I hope that you can read it. This is the back page of the original Sales Brochure. Check out the last two paragraphs where it says Deluxe Equipment and Custom Deluxe Equipment. Hopefully, this will help you to correctly identify your vehicle.

The body parts manuals generally have a break down of exterior color codes and interior fabric codes but I don't think they had standardized the 49 thru 52 models yet. They had a trim charts (form 3605-1 thru -6) but it wasn't yet a part of the catalog until 1953. I think they do list the different trim colors in the 1944 thru 1952 body parts catalog but a person needs the proper trim chart to source the codes first or you can't tell what color they are.

As to the "go to site", you've already found it.

I can answer part of your question, no they all didn't have over drive. My 50 four door was bought new by a family member, and doesn't have o.d, it didn't have a heater either. It did have a radio but my wife's great grandmother had the dealer remove it and add the delete plate. I was told that she said it would distract the driver, I wonder what she would think of cell phones.

Re: Any difference between 1950 Custom / Deluxe ?

There was a 1950 Ford quick facts brochure put out that has a lot of info. The Custom Deluxe models would have a higher quality trim package than the basic Deluxe. There might be one on line somewhere that could give basic colors on the exterior and interior. The salesman books had everything in them but they are hard to find and expensive when you do. Some of the old magazine adds actually have a lot of info too. I do believe there was a beige color that might look something like a camel brown. Brown & tan colors were popular in that era. Grey and blue also.

Good luck on your search, what part of the country are you from?, it may help if any of us spot a shoebox for sale. There are several apps that can search craigslist though out the USA, also you can have Hemmings email you daily any '50 Fords. I owned a '50 custom deluxe 2 door in 1964, unfortunately I sold it in 1967.

I drive BOSR136822. The 1949-50-51 Restorers Book from the Early Ford V8 Club would answer all your questions. 1950 had a Sandpiper Tan and a Hawaiian Bronze. Exterior trim was different as was mentioned. Deluxe models would have one arm rest and one interior sun visor, a Custom Deluxe would have two. Paint colors offered and interior and wheel trim was different also. The book from EFV8 is your best bet and a good read if you want accurate info........Mark

Somerville, MA was the assembly plant. It's hard to say how many assembled there are still around. Fords tend to migrate too so no telling where they might show up. I'm originally from Kansas so most of them up there in that region were assembled in Saint Louis.

I am attaching a copy of the Specifications page which shows the differences between the "Deluxe" and "Custom Deluxe" models in 1950. The brochure was printed in October of 1949 so there is no mention of the Crestliner. Wasn't "born" yet! Hopefully you can see the equipment differences and colors available (third column). Pat

I had a 51 that was Hawaiian Bronze and painted my 31 the same color as I liked the color.

Here is a pic of my Hawaiian Bronze with original faded paint It is the one on the right. If it is this color then the dash is the same color. Other wise the dash would be grey except on convertibles and Crestliners. If you have the EFV8 club restorers book, there is a cowl code that will tell you what the interior is.

Re: Any difference between 1950 Custom / Deluxe ?

Deluxe models had 16" wheels, 1 sunvisor, no courtesy interior lights, 1 interior light on pull switch on dash, no chrome trim on ends of dash, rubber floor mats, no armrests, black rubber trim around windshield and back glass, and fixed rear vent glass windows.. In other words, plain.

There should be stamped numbers on upper firewall underhood that will indicate color code and body style

The Early Ford V8 Club of America publishes a restore’s guide for the 1949-50-51 Zford that contains the exact information you are looking for.

It has chapters on the different models, exterior, interior including paint colors and interior fabric pictures.

Available thru Early Ford v8 web site.

Hope this helps,

Tom

Buy the Early Ford V-8 Club's 49-51 Ford book. It's the best money you can spend on getting the information you need. www.earlyfordv8.org.
