Pooch, are you saying your '28 came ex Canada with wood sub frame, or it was built up at Geelong with one like most of the Aussie built bodies?

Well you got me there.

I got no idea.

I presume mine was a CKD assembled here.

Only had it 3 months.

I suppose i should not be answering a USA question in hindsight.

My '28 Phaeton has a steel subframe. Personally, I have never seen a phaeton body with a wood subframe.

Pooch, Canadian CKD phaetons had a steel subframe. Not many in Australia of original delivery, a massive 6 in total for 1928 and 0 for 1929. The Geelong built phaeton had wooden subframe/seat frames but had the full metal doors for 28/29. The numbers for Geelong phaetons are 8,860 for 1928 and 3701 for 1929.

Dave, any links to the history of Geelong 28/s?

What exactly was in the CKD kit?

Was the wood grown here?

If so, any idea where forest was, or was it just bought from timber suppliers.

I would assume so, but had to ask.

I know Ford had their own forests in USA (or) Canada.

Did stuff like seat springs/ wiring/ trim (door and scuttle panels) etc get imported or sourced here?

AS a matter of trivia, my ole man worked at Geelong Ford plant in 1936.

Live in Balmain, Sydney, applied and got the job, was given a few pounds and told to front up at Geelong several days later.

He worked there thru the war years.

Said he was given blueprints of parts for all sorts of machines.

He had no idea what any machine was completed, as he was only privy to a small part to make at a time.

Pooch, I have no links to anything about the Geelong plant. AFAIK the CKD's were the whole car. The wood was local, it is mountain ash, which is a type of eucalyptis. I don't know whether Ford had their own plantations or what panels amd trim parts were stamped in Australia. I can only assume that some were stamped here as some are unique to the wooden framed bodies.

It was your 28 that got me thinking about the sub rails. I keep looking at the pictures you have on craigs list. but I am not sure I would want the right hand drive. I am still tossing it in my head. I dont live that far from you. Thanks

Tracy, It is strange to drive. The gas pedal is in between the brake and clutch. Shifting is left handed. When you look over your left shoulder to see who is next to you when changing lanes you're looking at the back seat. My assumption is if you work for the Post Office or the trash company there would be no adjustment time. It is different! I also have it listed here on the "Barn"

Is the gas pedal on the right on a left hand drive model A?

The centre gas pedal and the foot rest is a PITA on my right hand drive.

Like wise! Your first reaction is to press the brake pedal to make it go and the clutch pedal, depending on shoe size, comes down on the foot on the accelerator. I guess it's just what you're use to?
