Warped spin-on oil filter adapter? y-block

I fired up a 292 for the first time yesterday and oil came out between the filter and block. Two different people had checked the filter tightness and it happened anyway.
Can the spin-on adapter be warped or out of shape somehow?
It looked fine and the 'old-guy' y-block specialist at the machine shop that rebuilt the engine installed the adapter.
I haven't taken the (Wix) filter off to look at it yet.
Is there another brand of filter that might fit better

Thanks,
Dennis

Remove the adaptor plate and place it flat on the ground.

Chances are that it has warped slightly convex.

If you have a piece of pipe you can use it to hammer it back to the correct shape of slightly concave.

Dont be scared to beat on it as it will take some pressure to get it to bend.

This warpage happens due to the opposing tension placed on the adaptor when screwing on the oil filter.

I have even encountered brand new adaptors with this problem.

Makes a hell of a mess and pisses you off for sure. Of course make sure the rubber gasket has not been compromised.

You may also try taking a pick or something with a sharp point and running it in the area where the gasket went for the original canister. Just in case there is a small piece of the old gasket that was missed. Also I think the adapter has a top. Also before torquing down maybe try turning back and forth a few times to help the adapter seat. Worth a try...

After problems with two adapters, I went back to the stock unit and haven't had any problems since.

I think what he means there, is that the adaptor should be installed so that the little oval shaped hole is aimed toward the top, but if it were installed with that hole turned in a different direction, it will not cause a leak.

As I recall, the adaptor plate on my Y-block was made of pretty thick metal. My guess is that the new adaptors you can buy from the resto parts suppliers these days are probably much thinner metal and need to be dealt with carefully.

Additionally, I do not use an oil filter wrench to tighten the spin-on filter on mine. Just hand tighten. Coat the gasket on the back of the filter with oil before screwing on to the fitting. Mine does not leak a drop with hand tightening only. Just throwing that out there in case tightening the filter too much might be distorting the adaptor plate.

I used to have a 312 that would randomly push a bunch of oil past the gasket next to the block. Usually idling. I was young and dumb but I think it was a problem with the by-pass sticking.
I agree that anything newly manufactured would be suspect as not having original quality. I have a couple extra junk 292s with original spin ons. I've been going to put one on my 59 pickup but am balking at the price of the gasket, lol.

Use your drill press bed or table saw bed to check it for flatness and do as Ole Mics suggested. You can flatten it out and install a new gasket. Another option I have considered is purchasing a new aftermarket billet style stee or aluminum plate. A little pricey for me but a good solution. I've seen them on ebay. I have original style on all my yblocks and never any issues.

Thanks everyone.
I'll crawl underneath it tomorrow and see what I can find.

I had a pile of trouble with a rubber gasket. I bought a filter element for a 55 with a canister just to get the fiber gasket. The fiber gasket seals much better.
