1931 Model A starter

Bendix hangs up on ring gear. Thought I resolved it by adding a shim. Drove the car on a one week tour and never had any problems. Tonight went on a 15 mile dive, stopped for supper and of course tonight it hung up. With the limited tools I had with me I got it unbolted, but it usually won't let go without some persuasion. But no punch or hammer tonight. Put in neutral and used the crank handle and gave it a yank and it let go. Put it back together and it's good to go again. Someone once told me that a Ford 9N Bendix will work better. Any suggestions other than tearing out the motor?

You can also place it in third and rock the car back. That will work most of the time.

Rubbing the flywheel teeth with Wheel Bearing Grease helps prevent lots of HANG-UPS. Lurned this on Jaguars, the Older ones used a similar Bendix.

Dont be a wimp when you push on the starter button. If you push on it, let it up and push again quickly, that will hang it up. Push hard and dont let up until it starts. If you do let up, let things quiet down before pushing again.

Mine hangs up some times and as Rswhidekid said I put it in 3rd rock it back and it usually comes loose.
Better than pulling the starter each time.
