Seatbelt routing thru front seat
 

Getting ready to put the seats in our '29 murray body town sedan.
Looking for info and photos of the seatbelt routing for the front seat.

Seat belts are mostly useful to keep you, or your passenger from falling out of your car in a minor crash. In a major crash, even if everyone stays in your car, there will probably be injuries. Drive carefully, and wear your seatbelt.

If you're going to install lap belts, you might want to do a little more research on this forum and look at installing retractable shoulder harnesses as well. Sit in your driver's seat and bend your body at the waist and see what happens to your head. Little guy's faces will hit the steering wheel and the big guys noggins might even reach the windshield even with lap belts on.

While some cars are more difficult than others to install shoulder retractables, there is always a way to figure out how to do it so they will work properly. My three older cars are extremely different from each other but I installed full lap and shoulder belts in all of them.

Our car came to us with front lap belts, brackets bolted to a cross brace angle below the floor at the back inside of the bottom seat cushion. The 60" belts run up between the seat cushions. One owner installed 3 point belts in a tn sedan (2 belts in front and rear each) by attaching the top bracket in the rear seats to a custom angle up at the rear vertical body seam (rear window area) and a single stud bolt thru the rear quarter uphol.panel to accept the provider's 3rd bracket. Similar angle upper bracket at the B pillar wood for the fronts.

There is no support at the B pillar in a 4 door to mount the upper bracket. That pillar is only there for the doors to latch to and has no side impact strength. It's only held in place by a few screws.

Whatever you install do not anchor them to a frame cross member or frame. If this is done in a crash you may be the only attachment point holding the body on the frame!

Check out Julio's auto parts they have the correct hardware and plate for mounting to the floor pans. The plates are designed to NOT pull through the floor pan. They will bend the pan which will absorb some of the G's. Three point would be better but not a difficult install since the pillars of our A's have little strength and would require major changes. JMHO I have lap in my truck so at least I should not fly out the doors which open without much effort not like our modern latch systems.

Hi Ed,

Lots of sincere discussions, guesses, myths, sometimes even helpful information, etc., etc. for installing vintage car seat belts. As usual, everyone has different theories and opinions.

You may want to look into WESCO Performance Seat Belts, with lap belts secured to a Model A reinforced "floor" behind the front seat, to keep Model A passengers inside the Model A after the doors fly open; and ........

Shoulder straps passing over the front seat's back rest and secured to a Model A reinforced "floor" behind the front seat to keep Model A passengers from lunging forward into the Model A steering wheel and windshield.

Installation instructions and diagrams of the above mentioned system are presented on their website.

Also, never hurts to call them for questions and advice.

Not too difficult to securely fasten a light weight Model A body to a Model A chassis.

One half inch diameter anchor bolts spaced on 36" centers can securely fasten a light framed wood building to a heavy concrete slab ...... should not be that difficult to secure a Model A light body to a heavy chassis attached to a heavy engine and drive train.

In Katrina, light weight wood framed houses actually lifted upwards and floated several blocks "with" the massive, heavy concrete slabs attached when the 10 foot high tidal wave approached a subdivision at record speed ...... 1/2" bolts were provided "only" on building perimeters to meet building code.

Here you go. I used a sold price of angle iron as you can see i got at ACE Hardware. That was attached from the BOTTOM> you must take the seat put. They from the back end i attached the seat belts them selves. I used all Grad8 hardware.. Feel free to contact me for any help
