Gas Gauge Rod

Does anyone have the dimensions and angles for the bends of the gas gauge rod.
Thanks

Re: Gas Gauge Rod

Herb, the rod is relatively straight for 28-29 and a slight downward bend for 30-31. You can find the exact measurements in the Service Bulletins, BUT -

The best way to be accurate is to temporarily screw in the guage, or have someone hold the guage in the hole, and work the float up and down with a bent wire from the fill opening. Look inside the tank with a flashlight and compare the reading on the guage with the position of the float inside the tank.

Check the range in movement on the float, don't assume that the float has to touch the bottom of the tank to read empty, the correct float position for Empty may be a short distance off of the bottom. In other words, don't bend the rod so your guage reads full, but the tank won't actually be full. You'll get the idea once you put the guage in and move it up and down a few times.

When the float touches the top of the tank on FULL, when it shows EMPTY, you "should" have about a GALLON left. That depends on whether your COAT HANGER wire is accurate or not???

Hi guys, thanks for your suggestions.
I should of said that the gas gauge rod is basically straight, just wanted to know how and where to bent it. It's for a '31 tank.
Thanks

I looked at Bratton's and they only show one Model A gauge for all years.....

So this is out of a 29.....

Any use?

These are the only two photos I have that show the wire..... sorry no measurements...

The curves help miss the filler strainer.

Hi Chris...Are you any relation to Bert Haynes who was President of the Model A Restorers Club of Arizona about 1960? Thanks, Ernie
