Re: Fender brackets front

No, the fender brackets are swapable. And depending on what month, were either forged or stamped.

Re: Fender brackets front

Front fender brackets were forged in 1928. The forged front brackets were carried over into early 1929 for many assembly plants. My early 1929 phaeton has forged front brackets and stamped rear fender brackets.

They are the same and usually need to be bent to fit the fender.

Re: Fender brackets front

You can bend the forged brackets without fear of breaking them, unlike the cast repros that will break easily. They can be bent cold or with heat. I once straightened out a forged rear coupe bracket that look like a horseshoe (must have been in an accident) to align it with an unbend bracket I had.

Rusty,
I just straighten one, to fit your fender, with my torch. I left it cool on its own because I was worried about tempering it. Didn't want to try bending it cold, but I would like to see how they bend on a junk one sometime. Pat

Re: Fender brackets front

Gary, there were also forged front fender brackets used in 1930. If things are off more than a little this could be the problem. It's easy to tell them apart by the shape where they attach to the frame - post a picture if there's any doubt about which you have.

Re: Fender brackets front

Also, the distance from the mount at the bottom to the two holes for the fender are different.

I am attaching a picture of some forged 1930 front fender brackets I have. Note the bosses for the larger bottom bolts - the lower boss is the same thickness as the top 2 bolts. 28/29 forged brackets have a much thicker lower boss - sorry I don't have a picture handy of the 28/29 bottom area of the brackets. Some time I will take a picture of the two together to easily show the differences.

I did bend these brackets to fit, fore and aft, the only fit now is the outer fender hole is a little off (high) will need to work on that, no breaking. Must not be remakes.

Re: Fender brackets front

Don't forget to insert the 2 headlight bar bolts through the fender and bracket holes. I got the outer fender carriage bolt to fit in one of my vehicles, but the headlight bar would not fit due to the bracket holes being off 1/4" to 5/16".

Actually I have 6 or 8 front brackets, so to easy the pain of fitting and bending them, I try different ones until I get a close fit. I don't know what I will do when I get down to the last few brackets for my 4th vehicle and only have two or three left, I guess I will have to start bending them.

Right, and I also kept bracket to frame bolts loose until all was fit up.
