Filter wrench
 

Anyone know of a cap style oil filter wrench that will grip the fine ribs at the bottom of a Motorcraft FL1 type filter? Or for that matter, where you bought it? Trying to get at one that has a oxygen sensor too close for comfort with the band type wrench.

But I'd bet your local parts house has one or can get it. Or Horror Freight or Northern Tool if there's one in your area.

Where in NE Iowa are you located? My mom's from Algona.

I bought one for that size filter years ago at O'Reillys. I'm sure they are still available.

I have one like that, bought it years ago but can't remember where. I also have a clamp type that is used with a ratchet. Both work in tight areas where a band type won't fit.

I have been saying for years to use a Motorcraft FL 400s in place of the FL 1 a. From Bobs the oil guy; FL1, 5.190 high - 3.78 dia. - FL400s, 4.14 high - 2.98 OD. They both have about the same specs for anti drain back, and micron filtering media. If someone needs a really short filter, the 910s is only 3.36 high, and 3.15 OD. It filters to 35 microns while the other two filter to 20 microns. The reliability of most Ford oil systems tell me to use what fits best. On my 55 sedan, the FL400 fits so much easier between the steering linkage and all the other crap in the way it made oil changes a please rather that a chore.

Thanks everyone, going shopping this afternoon. If the oRielys don't have I'll try the other sources. Got to get it done. Loaned car to a relative for couple weeks and had no idea they would put so many miles on it. Algona Iowa, I've heard of that. They were the source for authorized rebuilt parts and engines etc.. I'm in Jesup, wish I wasn't but stuck till retirement.

That's true about Algona. I also had an uncle who was the parts mgr. at the Ford dealer in Britt from the early 50s until he passed about 1965.

It's a done deal. Stopped at Advance Auto as they were the first place along the route I was going and they had one hanging on the wall with about a dozen others. Was a AC (autocraft?) 1090, that thing fit like a glove. Turned a 20 minute wrestling match into a 30 second deal. Took longer to figure out the warning message on the dash than it did to change the oil, go figure.

I use a huge pair of Channelock pliers, one size fits all, even if you can get a little bite on it, it comes off.

It's on a newer Mercury and has plastic panels underneath that only allow you to view the filter with a telescope.

I have a drawer full of oil filter wrenches. The ones I use about 95% of the time are the pliers kind. The metal band kind are about the least used of them all. Some newer cars the cap style and a long extension are the only way.
