Another oil filter canister question
 

First time changing the filter. Back in the day, the gas station attendant did the job.

I'm having trouble replacing the lid. Specifically, the rubber sealing washer under the lid doesn't want to stay in place while pressing the lid against the spring tension until I get the screw threaded tightly to hold it in place. Seems the rubber washer doesn't want to stay flat, having been bent in the package for so long on the boat. Should I fasten the rubber seal with hot glue or what's the best trick to get the lid in place with rubber washer intact for a tight seal?

I install the outer perimiter seal to the lid by using tacky chasis lube then put the hold down bolt on the lid wit some sotrt of grease then guide the lid downd holding the spring and lid in place then tighten the hold down bolt till it bottoms out and holds the lid and gasket in place then torque accordingly as to not damage the gaskets ,has worked for me for years, and no need for glue ,all according to a non warrped lid o r other deficiencies in the canister or lid, always check for leaks.

My filters come from NAPA and there are two seals of different sizes. One bigger than the other..... Do you have two?.... Mark

Ford is not the only one that used the same filter element.
Other manufacturers had canisters that were a slightly different size.
Use contact cement to glue the washer to the well cleaned cover.

never had a problem with good old grease on the gasket Ohhhh remember the good old days in the gas station

You probably never had one that was folded and/or bent as the O.P. says.

Try to get it as flat as possible and maybe some gasket sealer to hold it in place. If you can set it on the cannister and push the cover down then all the better. I would stay away from hot glue as it my gob up in places and cause leaks. I found the nut needs to be good and tight to get a god seal.

51Merc gets up earlier than I do!!..... yes the same filter was used in different canisters. I have put my gasket in the sun on a black surface with the wrinkle up to get it flattened out. I agree it has to be a good seal with the bolt tight to prevent leaks.... Mark
