Starting A Model A

when you press on the starter button with the key on shouldn't the amp meter show a discharge ? If it does not what would be the problem "

If you see anything it should be a minor wiggle. The starter is NOT run through the ammeter.

Hi Bill,

Just in case you may have any slim doubts about the present routing of your electrical wires, most Model A Parts catalogs have wiring diagrams .... or same can be found under "Search" above ..... a few wire re-routing changes were made from 1928 - 1930.

If the ammeter does not flicker a bit when cranking, the most likely problem is you néed to clean the points. As the distributer turns, the points open and close, causing a fluctuation on the ammeter. If the points are corroded or dirty, the ammeter will not flicker when cranking. There are other reasons too but that is common, especially if the car has sat for a while.

Until the end of 1929 the original Model A's ammeter didn't show the coil draw while cranking.

My 28 was that way also, but I switched the black coil wire to the other terminals box post, so the ammeter now shows coil draw while cranking.
