King Pins

How much, if any, play is acceptable in the king pins on a 40 pickup ? Right side has none, left side has approx. 1/32".

Re: King Pins

ZERO play is only acceptable as it only gets worse.

Re: King Pins

Don't disagree with zero play as the objective, but back in the day, the State of Virginia would pass up to 1/16th movement at the top of the tire,

Re: King Pins

That makes sense as 1/16 at the top indicates almost nothing at the kingpin assuming
the wheel bearings didn't influence the 1/16 finding..

Re: King Pins

It depends on where the slack is caused. If it is in the axle end, replacing or tightening the lock pins should fix it. If it is in the spindle, it is likely the bushings were improperly reamed. When the bushings are replaced in the spindle, the inside diameter of the bushing is reduced, making inserting the king pin difficult or impossible. They need to be sized to allow a hard hand push. We use our piston pin machine to size them, as a hand reamer often removes too much material. We advise all king[pin bushing to be sized by a machine shop.
