Oil pump short body v/s long body

What is the difference between a long and short body oil pump?

Carpenter has long body pumps. Mac's has short body and how to convert to long body.

I cannot find any reference to short or long body pumps in the Ford catalog

39 pickup with 221 flathead. It has 68-6600 pump that needs to be replaced.

Use the short late model pump with the built in pressure relief valve . Much better pump.

If you use the later short pump & pickup you'll need to remove the baffle from the oil pan.

the long pumps, henry wanted 30psi at 30 mph. this some times puts you pretty low at idle depending on you motors health. later short pumps will put out about 50, maybe idle at 15 to 20. you need the correct pickup tube to bolt on the short pump, and either remove or modify the baffle in the oil pan floor. many folks prefer the later short pump on a fresh motor, but the original pumps work fine as well. i have a new one in the box if interested, not very valuable to me.

The old short pumps will put out over 75 lbs pressure. Pressure is controlled
by the bypass valve. The bypass springs all go weak over time. You need to
put about a 3/16" shim out of 1/8" pipe on the top of the spring and spin the
engine with a mechanical gauge, the plugs out and 12 volts to the starter.
The pressure you see will be what you will have at 45 MPH. You need to build
a test fixture and spin the pump with 1/2" electric drill. Bend the plastic out-
put hose to simulate the bearing and cam bushings restriction. Look up past
posts for more detailed instructions. G.M.
