Settle a friendly difference of opinion..

A Model A buddy and I were talking about the "B" engine. He thinks it was introduced in the Model A in late 1931.

I think it was not available until the 1932 Model B was introduced along with the V8 option.

Who wins the cold one?

He may have seen a car with the optional "police" head, which was labeled 'B'. Since 'B' on the head was already taken by the A police head when the 'B' engine came out, the heads on the 'B' engine were labeled "C". However there was never a Model C engine.

About what I told him today. He was surprised when I said there was never a "C" engine..

He claims he has a piece of paper showing the "B" engine in a 1931 Model A. Probably just as you described..

I'm running two A's with the Police "B" head. Have yet to find a "C" head.

My 30 Coupe, long sold.. had a "B" engine with a "C" head.. Talk about non-standard stuff.. Probably worth about 5 million now.. ;)

Almost all the heads used on the 1932-34 four cylinder engines had a block letter "C" on them. The part number of the head with the block "C" was "B-6050".

I see the major difference being the water kneck on the A head. The bolt patterns look the same can you put a b head on a A engine? or A a high comp head on a b engine.

You can put one on an A engine but you must use the B water pump.

Chris is correct but I wanted to add that you need to use the "B" head gasket as the combustion chamber is shaped different. In answer to the other question in the original post yes you can run a Model A high compression head on a Model B engine (I an currently doing it). You also need to run the Model B gasket with the Model A high compression head.

A true "B" engine will have a mounting pad for a fuel pump. The head is not a very good indicator.
