Windows XP - Leaves Most Very Vulnerable to Attack
 

Thought I'd post this here . . . even though it has nothing to do with Fords!

XP = Nightmare: Actually you should really consider getting off of XP - as it is a 'hackers dream' as far as virus', etc.. This is the reason why Europe and 3rd World countries get hit really hard with new global virus releases (as they're not up to date in many cases).

Recommendation: Try to get to Window 10 with all the latest security patches, set it up for auto-updates and get a GOOD virus protection package like 'Bit Defender'. You need to do everything possible to protect yourself - as you're obviously on the Internet, or you wouldn't be reading this!

If Stuck on XP: Also, Microsoft stopped updates for XP in 2014, but recently released a set of emergency updates to help prevent some of the globally destructive 'ransomware' attacks for infecting XP. At the very least - apply these updates.

Firefox is ending support for Windows Vista as well.
I was told that my old computer can't handle Windows 10.So...guess who has to buy a new computer?

Had Windows XP and loved it. Bought a new computer several years ago w/ Windows 10 ( other one was getting old anyway) because they wouldn't support XP anymore, and we like Windows 10 just fine.

CAUTION: Do not buy AVG for your security, they are a great outfit had them for years, but every time Windows 10 does an upgrade AVG does not recognize it and locks up your computer. Had this happen four times it's a pain. We un-installed Anti Virus Guard (AVG) at the computer guy's high recommendation.

We're now using Windows Defender that comes free w/ Windows 10, works GREAT and is administered by Microsoft so upgrades are problem free.

MS quit supporting XP a long time ago and just quit supporting Vista a few months ago. They are vulnerable but if you don't have anything on it worth stealing or losing then it's really not an issue. Back the good stuff up on an external hard drive and your good to go.

For those of you that have a computer that can't handle windows 10 and don't want to spend the spare cash on a new one, you might want to consider one of the Linux distributions. Ubuntu/kubuntu or fedora are very good and easy to setup and use.

Xp is 16 years old it is time to move on. Win 7 will get extended support till 2020

I wasn't a fan of Windows10 at first, but after I figured out how to configure it, it is just about the same format.

I have thought along that line re Linux.
The spare cash, you hit that right on the nose. Many of us out there have "used" computers as it is because that's what we could afford, also some don't like change till it forced on us.
Ah heck I still use a flip phone and buy my air time in 300 min. blocks. :)

As an option to Linux, some of the major office stores (Staples, Office Depot, Office Max, etc) have Win10 refurbished computers less than the price of Win10 upgrade software.

I've put Ubuntu on a lot of friends old PC's, most of them only want to cruise the Internet and write an occasional letter ( I load Libre office for them). When I go on vacation, I take a Raspberry Pi 3 and hook it to the large screen TV in the motels I stay at, I have a little portabable Bluetooth keyboard with mouse,works great to read the Fordbarn from across the room.

i'm on a 10 year old mac, 300 bucks on craigslist, works fine, never had a problem since i got rid of microsoft about 7 years ago

I wanted to switch from windows and bought a mini mac apple computer with no screen. Very affordable and I used my old monitor and mouse. I have gotten used to it and like it.

My computer crashed two years ago, so I looked around for the best deal I could find. Since my accessories (screen, keyboard, printer, mouse, and speakers) were still good. I bought a refurbished Dell I found on Amazon for $115. It had a better processor and twice the memory of the one I replaced. It was literally cheaper than adding memory to what I had. After two years, it's still running strong with no problems. Shortly after I bought it (it came with windows 7), I upgraded it to windows 10. I'm like a lot of people and hated it at first because the appearance was different; it seems they changed things for changes sake alone. After I got used to it, I like it fine. Also, I agree with the others about "Windows Defender". I don't think it's necessary to running thing else because Defender is so good. Microsoft finally got something right. It is so well integrated that you don't even know it's there, I bring it up to check on it once and a while, and see it has been busy updating and scanning all along, doing it's job.

I like the windows 7 due to the simplicity of it for older non touch screen puters. It took me a while to figure out all the changes to W10 but it solved a lot of the issues that combined touch screen capability had on the W8 so that it does OK with non touch screen systems.

I always have greasy fingers so the touch screen just wasn't going to work for me. My key board looks bad enough as it is. I wouldn't be able to see anything on a touch screen if I used that feature very much.

I have window Vista, but use Norton Symantec for the firewall an all the other necessary protection.
I just got an email from Norton Security about the latest virus, Petya, and according to them they have me covered because I have incoming emails scanned for viruses also. My employer got hit last week, someone in one of the front offices opened an infected email.

I have some Mac's which seem to work OK. On my windows machine I run Win10 and protect with Hitman Pro + Super Anti Spyware + Anti malware.

If you ever get hit with some nasties (don't ask), slide over to bleepingcomputer.com. I'm not affiliated in any way, but those guys love to fix problems and looked after me well.
