Anyone with any speedway oil pump experience in a 59a flat head? Any good?

I'm currenyly building an 8CM and have a Speedway oil pump to use. So I also am interested to hear of anyone's experience wiyhbthe pump.

Which Speedway oil pump are you talking about? They offer the Melling M15, M19, plus their knock off versions of these pumps listed as high volume and standard volume.

I've had trouble with aftermarket oil pumps. I use only original Ford Pumps. Have it tested before use.

Yes, just think. A 5k engine with a knock off pump. I've changed too many of them.

My sore spot with imported knock-offs, oil pumps or steering U-joints is poor heat treating, resulting in rapid wear.
I've had no issues with real Melling oil pumps, M19 or M15.

Mellings were my biggest problem. have never used them since. Maybe they've changed their quality control, but they kept denying their problem, and I'm not the only one that complained. I just don't trust them.

If I could just put another "tip" here, Speedway will tell you their own brand of the Flathead pump's are made by Pioneer. Their part numbers, "OP15/OP19, are definitely Pioneer's numbers. Problem being Pioneer is no longer involved in the oil pump business and hasn't been for many years now.

All the one's they do have available MAY just be "old" inventory, but all this info leads me to believe they also MAY be off-shore pieces. There is NO way to really know??

P.S. We feel, again from a business standpoint only, we would much rather know EXACTLY who is mfg these pumps, it's for this reason we will ONLY use the Melling line. I have enough "connections" over at Melling to be able to get straight answers, this is much more important here than saving a few dollar on a pump. With any possible oil pump issues it's NOT an easy fix by any means on these Flatheads. I realize (and really believe) Ol' Ron's had some past issues with aftermarket pumps but we've sold literally "hundreds" of the Melling pieces and have not experienced a single issue in over 40 years, not once.

Nor have I. I always use the Mellings M-19 pumps in my FH engines. I can recall hearing/reading many years ago that some Mellings pumps had castings that were undersize at the diameter that locates down in the block, and this should not have been a loose fit since this could cause problems with oil pressure. I've never personally seen this condition.

When I originally started my 34 I used a new out of the box Speedway pump. Cleaned tank and sealed, rebuilt carb new lines fresh ethanol gas can't get non ethanol in NJ did everything. Started fine with some priming of the carb and taking the top of the fuel pump off to prime also. Started fine. Next day went to do some minor stuff and adjustments would not start primed carb then i decided to take off the cap of the fuel pump to prime and the rubber seal was almost twice the size of original put a new cork gasket on the top cap and it started. Ethanol gas not compatible. Did not trust that pump so I put the original fuel pump on that I rebuilt with cork for the top cap also. Started right up and runs fine ever since. Sorry you guys are talking about oil pumps my Bad! This antibiotic is working real well!!!!!

Bases on all the great comments and experiences I'm convinced that the extra cost for the M19 is warranted. I ordered a M19 pump yesterday. Guess I'll have the Speedway pump bronzed and use it as a paperweight! Curt

Well, I guess I'm gonna be the guinea pig here. I have one in one of my "econo-builds" that I'm planning on firing later this summer. I guess I'll have to see. I figured I could save a few bucks and at least it will be well lubricated. In the real world, if it survives the initial fire-up, I'll probably never know the long-term effects at my age and rate of mileage.

Going back almost 20 years ago, I bought several rebuild kit for Patric's. This included everything including the oil pumps. # of the 40ur pumps had to be replaced. Patric's stood behind them. However I had to send several people Ford pumps for replacement. After receiving the pumps from Patric's i built a test fixture and teste them 2 were OK , one had a bad relief. At the tome I posted theis on the old Ford forum and found at that time many others had trouble with the pumps and there was a write up in a restoration Magazine about the pumps, I knew the outher, he said just send the pumps and they'd replace them, but offered no explanation of the problems. I know that JWL had mad some test as well. Since then I disambel the stock pump and check it out for wear. Most check OK so I just use them.
I'm glad to see they've checked into the problem and have solved the problem. But I distrust them. A oil pump is a very inexpensive part of a very expensive engine
