Rear brake assembly

Can the rear brake shoes and emergency brake be completly assembled on the backing plate and installed on the car? It looks like the brake actuating arm may not go thru the hole in the support arm.

Yes. Remove the radius arms (both sides and up by the U joint), install backing plate(s) loosely with the two bolts that don't go through the radius arms, and then reinstall the radius arm / snug everything back up. Learned this on the barn after struggling for days trying to do it without removing the arms.

As I just finished doing this I feel somewhat of an expert.

The answer to your question is YES, although I did remove the 2 springs from the e-brake band to allow some move ability.

First, remove the radius arms from both the rear flange and the front mount. Install the 2 SHORT bolts in the rear holes and snug them up with a long bolt in one of the front holes for alignment, then install the radius arm on that side, starting the bolt on the torque tube and tighten all 4 bolts on that side. I started with the drivers side. Then repeat on right side the same steps.

While you have the rear drum OFF, pull the service brake arm forward past the stop to expose the clevis hole and install the service brake rod, then return the lever to rear position. Sure makes it easier to install the clevis and cotter pin.
