Speedometer gear assembly
 

I have a decent speedometer gear assembly shown in the picture below, however the gear in it shows a lot of wear. I tried to search the archives, but I probably didn't use the correct search word. Anyway, gears are available at parts suppliers, but I don't know how to remove the shaft to replace the worn gear. If someone that has replaced the gear could explain how the gear is removed and replaced, I would appreciate it.

It should just slip out of the gear and out the threaded end of the turtle. Might have to soak in ATF and acetone

The washer that you picture above each spedo gear holds the shaft in. remove it.
Tap the other end and the shaft will come out. Soaking will help.Then the gear drops out of the turtle.

Rusty:

Use a screwdriver and remove the "top hat looking" cover. The shaft can be pulled out with needle nose pliers.

If you do not want to scratch up the housing by removing the plug.

As stated above ... remove washer first

1. find a deep socket the same size as the threaded area.

2. Duct tape the socket with several wraps of tape to the threaded end.

3. Grasp socket and housing in your fist with socket downwards.

4. Wack the assembly on a concrete floor several times ... the housing will stop when it hits the floor but shaft will keep moving ...

Usually the shaft will come out unless it is rusted into gear.

Thanks all for the suggestions. There was a lot of hardened grease around the gear as you can kind of see in the picture. I am now soaking the assembly in lacquer thinner and the the lacquer thinner is dissolving the grease. I think I will soak the assembly in Evaporust or ATF after the lacquer thinner in case the shaft is rusted to the gear. With all the grease around the gear, I doubt it is rusted, but to make sure, a little soaking in rust remover I hope will make sure. I will then try what Benson described.

Actually rusty if you follow what Brian French said it will easily come out . The housings arealuminum and you won't have any issues with rusting . Just remove the washer type insert onear the threads by gently prying one side and then the other and it will come out easily. Use a needle nose pliers to pull the shaft out
Clean,remove all trace of grease and you. An lightly bead blast. If you do so you must now all media out and I use a liberal amount of brake clean to spray the passage and cavity . Use grease to reassemble

Success! I got the shaft out. I think the lacquer thinner loosened or dissolved the crud without using any rust remover. However, I couldn't see anyplace to grab the shaft with a needle pliers. I just tapped the threaded end on a hard surface and the shaft started to come out. A little more prodding and I could grab the shaft end and pull it out. Now I know how to disassemble speedometer gear assemblies. I have four model A's so I will probably need to do it again. Thanks everyone for the help.

Many times the driven gear "appears" WORN! The gear teeth are a "LOOSEY-GOOSEY" fit, to allow the fitting of a different tooth count gear. Drive shaft gears are all the same tooth count.
