Re: Coolant recovery tank????? I added a 2" x 15" Stainless Steel coolant recovery tank from Speedway last year to my 34. Part No. 911-02215 - $35. I mounted to the side of the radiator. No more coolant on the ground and I can keep the radiator full, which seems to make it run cooler. I think it looks fairly unobtrusive and matches with some of the other Stainless items on my engine. Sorry but I don't seem to be able to post a picture in my reply. When I click on insert image, it seems to only allow a URL - not something off my computer. Anyone know how you post a picture in a reply? I have one I can attach if I know how.

Re: Coolant recovery tank????? Sorry, I was referring to a Pix of how it was mounted near steering box, my bad.

Re: Coolant recovery tank????? Made mine from 20" of 2" ABS black plastic pipe and two caps. The tube to the bottom is made from an aluminum arrow shaft and the overflow is a 90 degree brass elbow and hose barb threaded in to the top cap. Black rubber tubing to hook it together. I made the hanger straps from 3/4 x 1/16" flat strap and fastened it to the drivers side radiator shroud bolts.
You have to look right at it to see it as the motor compartment is black. |
Re: Coolant recovery tank????? Looks like O'Reilly's has every kind of 'puke' tank you could possibly want.
See them here > http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/se...uxe&vi=5021294 I think this is the one G.M. recommends:http://images.oreillyauto.com/parts/...m/int/mcr3.jpg |
Re: Coolant recovery tank????? I have one like the above in my '38 w/276. It has about 2" in the bottom when cold, holds all the expansion my coolant has, and draws it back in while cooling down. Works great, it just doesn't look very "vintage". Mine is hidden down on the frame rail and the hood sides being so high make it hard to see.

Re: Coolant recovery tank????? Those things from O"Reilly's are real ugly. I use the tubular ones the street rodders use. Aluminum or SS. Very nice looking and can be painted black if you want to hide it. This one is from Jegs.

Re: Coolant recovery tank????? I used an old Marvel Mystery oil can that a friend plumbed for me in my old 40 coupe - worked well as I never overheated in the 15 plus years I had the car ....

I attach the tube to the core support/radiator using plumbers tape/bolts, I use clear tubing to attach the tube to the radiator overflow and for the tank overflow, this acts as a sight tube to check the coolant level. |
Re: Coolant recovery tank????? Is a recovery tank a better solution than Skips 3# pressure relief system? I have one but have yet to install it. Thanks.

Re: Coolant recovery tank????? The plastic bottle shown in post #2 is better than the 3 lb valve. The valve can
get dirty and any coolant pushed out the valve is lost. With the bottle the coolant is recovered and as the engine cools it is drawn back into the engine. I have the same bottle as in post #2. I checked it this morning and it sits with the lid towards the back of the car and the center of the bottle is at the filler plug on the steering box. G.M. |
