Tack's Tack"s And More Tack"s

I was working on removing the remnants of my old headliner and the rear corner's material in my 30 Town Sedan today , and removing all those tack's , very small nails , more tacks , and more tacks , and I couldn't help but think what a job it must of been , " back in the day " , and the poor guy's that had the job of putting ALL those tacks in by hand , one by one . Not having something as quick and fast as a pneumatic stapler and such to speed it up like we do now , among other time saving tools . Myself , it sure makes me appreciate the skill and workmanship that was put into these old jewels .
just my 2 cent's on the days of old workmanship .

Putting in all those tacks probably wasn't as tedious as you might expect. A good trimmer would have tacks in his mouth and use his tongue to turn them around so that he could pick up the next one from his lips using the head on his magnetic hammer. Through experience, they were excellent shots at placing the tack and driving it home with a minimum number of blows.
As for the number of tacks, maybe at sometime in your car's history, the part of the trim on which you are working has been replaced before. The person doing it may not have removed the old tacks so you might be looking at 2 or even 3 sets of tacks.

Back in the day when I was an auto trimmer the term was spittin tacks. Synchro is spot on. Hogs rings are done the same way. Several in the mouth and get them in position with your tongue and "push" them into the hog ring pliers jaws.

Wouldn't it have been fast and easier (and cheaper) to build a solid steel roof?

I've seen NUMEROUS Model A Hot Rods, with SOLID roofs, & MANY develop stress cracks, as the chassis is SO FLEXIBLE:eek:
That's why doors sometime POP open, over slow, uneven terrain! (OOPS!!!)
I've "heard" that Station Wagons make BEAUTIFUL, MUSICAL sounds, over uneven places????

The OP is talking about replacing the headliner which is the lining INSIDE the car. You'd have that with a solid roof or fabric.

That is how I installed the roof liner in my Fordor. Mouth full of tack and put them in place with the tongue stick my Stanley tack hammer to tack and place tack with a light blow to where I wanted to go. Then hit it a few times harder if in the correct place. Inherited the tack hammer from my Grandfather who was a painter and paper hanger. Had watched him use the hammer a many a time.
Those older guys were true artist at there jobs.

You sure wouldn't want anyone to greet you with a big slap on the back!

Kinda reminds me of the Mr Bean episode where he was playing bingo with a mouth full of water and goldfish (long story!), won, and involuntarily swallowed the lot in his rush to call out "Bingo!"
