49 Mercury clutch I'm about to convert my stock 49 Mercury to overdrive. The clutch is relatively new, maybe 3,000 miles, and works well, but has slight chatter I think due to my failure to surface the flywheel.
While I have tranny out should I replace the whole clutch assembly or can I save it by doing the flywheel? |
Re: 49 Mercury clutch Clutch discs wear in to the surface they are first run on. If you resurface the flywheel, the disc will have to wear in to the flywheel again. Same with the clutch cover ring if you change a disc. If I do one, I do all just to get everything back to specs.
Condition of the engine/transmission mounts and the bearings for the clutch equalizer & throw out shaft can also have an effect on how well the clutch operates. Too much movement there can cause chattering too at times. I always make sure my throw out fork is good and solid too. |
Re: 49 Mercury clutch Good advice rotorwrench. Thanks.
