Rivets...

This concerns the end of the rivet about to be peened...

Once the rivet is installed, is the exposed end, or height, of the rivet to be that of the diameter of the rivet or twice the height of the exposed end?

Thanks.

Re: Rivets...

Steve, according to "big flats rivet company", put the rivet in the hole with all the layers to be riveted. Cut the rivet to 1 1/2 x the shank diameter. If the holes are oversize due to rust, wear or drilling out the original, add some to compensate.

Re: Rivets...

Steve,
I am currently restoring a pickup box for my 29 CCPU. I have noticed that Ford peened rivets differently in the bed. Some rivets have fairly large peened ends, whereas, some rivets have a small peened area. There were 3 or 4 rivets that didn't even peen well enough to secure the three levels of metal. I guess the assemblers either used too short of rivets in some places or didn't have the metal layers compressed enough before riveting.

Re: Rivets...

Protrusion of the rivet tail out the packup should be 1.5 to 2 diameters. Use a rivet gun on the rivet's head, and a bucking bar on the rivet's tail. The upset rivet tail height should be 0.5 of the rivet's diameter.

By the way, the clearance of the rivet in the hole is 1/32" before setting and expanding the shank.
