33 dash machine turning size What size are the machine swirls on a 33 dash? Anyone ever tried to match the factory look? If so, how did you do it? Dennis

Re: 33 dash machine turning size 2 Attachment(s)
this is a `32 instrument panel that i restored sometime ago. originally these panels were nickel plated, engine turned and then chrome plated. and that`s where the trouble starts- engine turning nickel is difficult the nickel wants to "smear" instead of "cut.

Re: 33 dash machine turning size FWIW I have always had great results with the Cratex abrasive sticks, but I never did anything nickel plated. I worked with an old German toolmaker years ago and when I showed him something I had damascened he said the old world method was olive oil and an abrasive powder used with a length of dowel rod. I wonder if that might help with the nickel.

Re: 33 dash machine turning size Did this type of design Swirls; in school, years ago, we used a dowel 1/4", 3/8", or the size wanted , dipped in a small amount of oil,; dipped into the abrasive material;( grinding dust from the bench grinder,)or other abrasive material,Silica sand; from the hobby shop , a bit of oil wiped on the metal surface to be designed, worked quite well; but the trick was to get the swirls in a straight line, best to practice on a bit of scrap material first, OMHO..
