Mercury Wheel Bearing
 

Left rear wheel bearing showed a little play last time I had the 52 Merc up on the jack so I was just surfing around checking out new bearing availability. One listed on ebay seems pretty pricey at $86 Canadian plus whatever it might cost to ship it across the border to Canada. Anybody have a part number for that bearing or is the one in the ad actually the right number?

8A-1225 is the rear axle bearing P/N same as Ford cars in 52/53 unless Canadian Mercury cars used a different rear axle. Mercury cars here in the US used the Dana 41/44 from 1949 through 1951 then they used the Ford rear axle except for station wagons which retained the Dana 44.

I believe it is a 88107 AR Timkin Take that number to a bearing house.

Pull you axle and write down the #. Your local supply house should be able to cross reference the # to another brand bearing.

Thanks for the feedback on parts numbers. A little searching those numbers comes back with 49 to 56 Ford rear axle bearings. Van Pelt and most of the other old Ford parts people seem to have them listed reasonably priced. Anything N.O.S. on ebay seems pretty high priced but I guess you are paying for the nostalgia of the old parts box. I'll see what is available locally first before I open up the axle.

Make sure you get the retaining ring also. I don't think the new bearings come with it like in the old days. I'm pretty sure I have one with the retainer but it gets back into the shipping cost.

Good point as I see some of the N.O.S. bearings on ebay do not include the retainer. Most of the old Ford parts suppliers like Macs include it. I even found a parts diagram at C&G which will help.

The Ford p/n was 8A 1225 a which changed to a A9AZ 1225 A. Have it under both numbers if you strike out.

Thanks for that info and offer. I will keep you in mind as I search. Found the bearing and retainer on Rock Auto but they make the N.O.S. ones on ebay look like a bargain. ($99.47 before shipping)!:eek:

Centric likely purchases the parts from a supplier. I don't think they are a bearing manufacturer so that's why Rock Auto is so high. The OEM 8A-1250-A is a FAFNIR 207TT6 but the SKF or Timken 88107-AR are decent bearings as well but the price will be high for new ones. A lot of them are made in China now so those will be a lot lower price.

For Sure. Rock Auto's system is set up for folks that don't know the actual part number. If you do know the part number you can go direct instead of plugging in all the auto information.

I think what was Fafnir is part of Timken now. SKF are likely not made in US but are still a very reputable bearing manufacturer. Timken bearings may not be made in the US for much longer if things keep going the direction they have been for some time but at least they try to maintain quality.

You can get maintenance and part manuals on CD for the old Fords & Mercs and the price is not bad.

Beware of any bearing that only has a number on it and no manufacturer's name. China junk.
