Re: Oops! Do you see what happens when you are tired and it is late in the day? Yep, I had just installed a better motor and a Tom Endy rebuilt transmission and forgot to include the little U-joint bell.
I noticed it the next day. Fortunately I have a 3:54 rear end that I was going to install. I will correct my mistake when installing that rear end, hopefully in the near future. My car has been down for several months and I'm anxious to get it back on the road. I had a leaky gas tank. I removed the cowl and gas tank, motor and trans. I had Tom Endy rebuild the trans. My plan was to re-install the gas tank, cowl, a better motor and the rebuilt trans in time for the pancake breakfast, but I ran out of time the night before and as you can see my mistake would have prevented the completion, any way. |
Re: Oops! Do you see what happens when you are tired and it is late in the day? I just did the same thing last week. We fought getting the spline into the u joint, then had to do it again. A lot easier the second time. Not only this, I put the rear brake together, then looked down and there behind me sat the brake shoes. Cukoo!!!

Re: Oops! Do you see what happens when you are tired and it is late in the day? Yes, getting the spline lined up and into the u-joint can definitely be a challenge, especially when you don't have an assistant.

Re: Oops! Do you see what happens when you are tired and it is late in the day? Better an OOPS than an OUCH! Too tired and late in the day is when I drop things on my foot. Always wear sensible shoes when working around a car (I'll spare you the pictures!).

Re: Oops! Do you see what happens when you are tired and it is late in the day? Ever tighten the last bolt on an engine installation, look up, and notice that there's a brand-new throwout bearing sitting on the bench??

Re: Oops! Do you see what happens when you are tired and it is late in the day? You just call it a "test fitting"

Re: Oops! Do you see what happens when you are tired and it is late in the day? I think we've all been "test fitters". :) Jeff

Re: Oops! Do you see what happens when you are tired and it is late in the day? FYI It takes a MAN to admit his Mistakes!
We are Human and it just Happens. |
Re: Oops! Do you see what happens when you are tired and it is late in the day? The worst I can remember was in 1974 when I had to replace the timing chain on a fully loaded Pontiac for a customer. When I got done bolting all the accessories back in place I noticed the oil slinger on my work bench. It does go quicker the second time around.:eek:

Re: Oops! Do you see what happens when you are tired and it is late in the day? I've always thought that a good memory is what makes a good repairman. Later in my career, I used to take a lot of pictures with my phone...

Re: Oops! Do you see what happens when you are tired and it is late in the day? Pulled my engine 4 weeks ago because I missed the clearance on #3 rod bearing and damaged the Babbitt. Anyway I finished the repair today and reaffirmed an engine won't run without the rotor!!

Re: Oops! Do you see what happens when you are tired and it is late in the day? I've been told, "It's on backwards" a few times..
|
Re: Oops! Do you see what happens when you are tired and it is late in the day? We took off the e brake to pull the trans and I told my buddy to put it back on when we were finishing up and I told him to pull the brake on. He said he had to push the button to pull it back. I said that can't be. He put it in 180 degrees backwards. The shaft came upward, but the mechanism was upside down. Never saw that before.

Re: Oops! Do you see what happens when you are tired and it is late in the day? Once, late at night, I replaced rod bearings in a 300CI Ford , buttoned it all up, put oil in and fired it up. Uh oh, what's that knock knock knock!! Sounds like a rod. Shut it down, drained oil, pulled pan and looked to see what was wrong. When #1 rod cap had been put on it hung up a bit on the bolts and didn't seat tight against the rod on one side. Even w/the nuts being tightened to spec the cap was still 20 or 30 thou short of seating. Loosened the nuts, tap tap tap w/a small hammer and the cap seated, replaced nuts, tightened to spec, buttoned it up, put oil in and fired it up again and all was well.
