How Do I Remove A 36 Spare Tire Cover?

1 Attachment(s)
Just bought a 36 Tudor. I have the key for the spare tire cover lock but it does not seem to release anything. Can someone tell me the step by step to removing the lock and cover to access the spare? Thanx.....Burly

Remove the spare tire tread cover first then turn the key in the lock and the unit will pull off.
Doug.

1934, Doug, is the spare tire outer cover just "tensioned" around the tire with no other retainers? I see a loop on the lower right end.

Yes, just expand it from the bottom using that loop as a finger hold and carefully remove it from your spare tire. Now you can unlock the face cover and pull it off.
Doug.

Be careful when removing the outer ring. It is somewhat awkward and you can easily scratch the paint, and it looks like you have a nice paint job. I know others who carry a spare in the trunk just to avoid this.

If I remember correctly. you have to push in while unlocking spare. Does my somewhat feeble mind serve me well?

All I know is JM35 and I had to figure it out while driving someone else's car. I think there was a spring that looped over a hook on the bottom to hold the outer ring on. Once that was off the key let us remove the face cover. We needed to borrow a jack from the family eating lunch in their mini van.

Ha ha Frank, when I first read this post two days ago, the first thing I thought about was our dilemma at the EFV-8 Club's WNM last October in Bakersfield, Ca. One very good way to learn how to remove the locked cover on a '36 rear mounted spare, if you've never owned a 36 Ford before, is to have a flat tire while driving one. Then after figuring out how to unlock the spare, we realized there was no jack in the car. After getting that resolved, we found the spare was missing some of the spring clips that hold the hubcap on the wheel, so we left that hubcap off, only to have everybody and their brother inform us that we had lost a hubcap. A fun trip for sure!! Have you ever noticed that every time we get together, crazy stuff starts to happen. LOL :D :D
