Manifs\d gasket Can someone tell me which way the copper gasketshould go between the exhaust manifold and exhast pipe. Should I use muffler sealing paste also?
If I can't get the gasket to seal can I use muffler paste alone? Thanks Bill G |
Re: Manifs\d gasket The metal, if one side only, goes towards the hotter exhaust manifold.

Re: Manifs\d gasket I would check both the manifold and engine for the sealing surface for flatness! Brattons one piece gasket, they say metal side towards manifold! If both surfaces are flat, no sealer would be needed. Hope this helps.

Re: Manifs\d gasket I believe he is referring to the pipe to manifold, in which case I would just use muffler sealer, if that still leaks then the insert should be installed.

Re: Manifs\d gasket I think Brian is right about the question referring to the pipe and not block to manifold. I don't use anything, but I have an Aries stainless, so the fit is good.

Re: Manifs\d gasket Tom is right, it is the muffler pipe to exhaust manifold. I used the sealer paste for now. We'll see how it works. I originally put the copper/asbesbestos ring in with the flange down into the muffler pie. It was hard to center and didn't seal. Still got the tic tic tic. I took it out and tried to reform it to put the flange up into exhaust manifold. It centered much better but the material between the copper faces appeared to be a graphite composition that broke all to pieces and fell out. I guess you can only use them once. We'll see how the paste works for now. Thanks for you replies so soon. Bill G

Re: Manifs\d gasket When I was still evaluating my Double A, I spent much time repairing things before buying new or good used parts, I spent over an hour filing that manifold set and cleaning up the header pipe using the muffler sealant.
It did sound sweet when I installed a new manifold and Aries muffler though. |
