41 radiator
 

I'm sure this has been discussed many times but not recently. I had my original 41 radiator leaks fixed, then rodded out. It still leaks. I have an original flathead motor on a stock car except for Mitchell OD, 12v, and electronic ignition. Originality is not my top priority but good fit is.

So time for new radiator.

Is Brassworks the best out there? Pretty pricey at $929 for 4 row without split core or crank hole. Built to order

They got a 4 row for $565 in stock. Looks like no fender bracket allowance.

How about an aluminum radiator?

Re-core original but who would do that?

I would say you need a new radiator shop. It should have been
pressure tested when they finished it. I just had two 36 radiators
rodded out, a new over flow tube on one and extensive repairs to
one top tank that has several large splits. Plus they straightened
the fins. I told them not to paint them I would take care of that.
Stopped by their shop yesterday to see how the second one was
coming and they were just putting the new over flow tube on.
I said I will pick it up in the morning, how much do I owe you, I
will bring a check. He said how's $180.00 sound for the two of
them, I said $200.00 sounds better. I think $180.00 was way to

I recently went with a Brassworks radiator for my '41 and went for correct appearance with split core, crank hole, wire channel, etc. In the past, I went with low cost solutions and later regretted not going with the original design.

Brassworks worked with me to determine how big of a core would fit. Their three row core was the widest I could put in the stock location and the top tank comes pretty close to the fenders but has adequate clearance. I am delighted with the results.

If you are not worried about correctness. I had a radiator recored for about $350. The radiator shop is excellent.

Real live radiator shops are getting more rare every year. I checked local SA,TX listings a few years back and all of the old shops were gone. They were replaced by new shops that sell only plastic and aluminum replacements for modern cars. My how the times change.

I think a shop could do the classic brass radiator business as long as they have a web sit and advertise well. That's the only way a shop can get into a niche market these days.

Agree Walker is a very good option - have one in my 41 as I drive it a lot - the original is in the attic.

My '41 had a truck radiator jammed in with no side braces or other top support, besides the hoses. I just put in the Champion CC4001FH aluminum radiator. It accepts the side braces. It is a few inches shorter than stock but fits well and looks good in my shiny engine room. My coupe has two sets of radiator mount holes in the frame, about an inch and a half apart; I used the forward holes, but will move it aft for closer fan if idling in traffic becomes an overheat problem. Using 180 degree thermostats, it goes right to just over center of temperature gauge and stays there through all traffic condition encountered so far. Have not had the hot day stuck in traffic with a tail wind test yet.
