Horn/Light Switch Rod???

Is there a way to determine the length of the horn rod to fit my car? It has the later style steering box with the letter F on the outer side.

Just a suggestion...you could stick some safety wire or a thin rod down the hole to where it just shows enough to get the spring and spider gear on and measure.
Then you can look to see which rod would be best fit.

Just an idea

the parts catalogs one of them has a chart showing "if your steering shaft is XX long then use XX light rod."

I guess I should have asked how far out the bottom does the horn rod stick out for the spring & spider to sit properly to engage the light switch.

HI,
I am new here and was wondering that too as my 31 slant window horn rod seems to be shorter than the spider or rather it does not extend as far as the spider does. Should they be about even?

The 2 tooth steering was introduced in February 1929, and my 2-23-29 gas tank date Tudor also has the large "F" two tooth box.

Wasn't the large F only used on the early 2 tooth steering?

I believe the "F" is found on the Ford version of the two-tooth box. The Gemmer version does not.

If the rod does not extend past the spider how did you get the spider retainer on?

Thanks for reply ,sorry in not responding ,not aware of any response. Anyway I just press up as hard as I can with a small screwdriver and place the c clip on the horn rod ,not easy. Was asking because new harness needed to be soldered on center contact to make up the almost 1/8 inch difference to allow it to touch the horn rod when depressing the horn button on steering wheel.

Re: Horn/Light Switch Rod???

the horn rod should extend 1 1/4" past the plate that your bale fastens to. so if you run a wire down though the shaft, being flush at the top and extending 1 1/4" past the plate. that is what you need for the length.

Re: Horn/Light Switch Rod???

My horn rod is too short to make contact with the center terminal inside of the switch. When you say it is supposed to extend 1 1/4 past the plate, where are you taking this measurement from exactly. Where the plate is bolted to the column i.e. where the bail retaining wires are anchored to the column?

Re: Horn/Light Switch Rod???

yes 1 1/4" passed the plate that bolts to the bottom of the steering box that the bail fastens to. if it is to short you will play hell getting the spider and clip on.
