Looking at a car with no reg or title. Is there a way to register it in NY?

So, is it a car, or parts? You'll get lots of responses-but only look for those from NY and then, confirm with your DMV. Don't spend a dime more than necessary until it's titled and save all your receipts. Post some photos, too.

Ck out the new York state DMV website and find out what you need to register a car in NY. Disregard any advice/stories from anybody NOT in NY. JMO

New York does not title pre 1973 cars, if the current owner gets the car registered then They should be able to get a New York State transferable registration which you should be able to use to get a title in your state.

Chris has the correct scoop for New York. 5 years ago, I purchase a car from New York that only had a New York bill of sale. New York issued a transferable registration from which after my own state's inspection, I was able to license the car in my state.

Every state has different regulations. Yes, a former DMV employee could live in another state-but then might not have the most current information. And, this and other websites are full of helpful folks from elsewhere giving opinions on what happens where they live. Would you want advice form someone in Spain if you were trying to title a car in Belgium?

One (1) hint from a few of life's past experiences:

No matter if you are asking a girl for a date, asking a teller for a loan, or asking a doctor for a prescription for Viagra:

Just like not asking a person at NY DMV ....... your answer may always be "NO" ......... until you ask an official at NY DMV.

Just try grabbing the telephone to call ..... or try visiting DMV "soon" before somebody else takes it away.

Every state operates in totally different ways.

Went from living in New Hampshire where vehicles older than 12-years need NO TITLE. . . to Pennsylvania where a 1908 motorized roller skate requires a TITLE. Getting a TITLE in PA for a motor vehicle without one is a festival of endless autocracy. A personal letter direct from the Pope in Rome won't do much good either.

The Pope can't help you in PA, but your local state representative can, and should. Not much help for the OP, though.

What he is trying to say is, this subject comes up quite often. It usually ends up with everyone telling their own horror stories, from their own areas, which are no help to the questioner.

I bought a car in N.Y. state in the early 60's took forever to get a title,got stopped in N.Y. while still waiting for the title,wound up in jail for the day.

Right. Of course, reading the first post, there is no indication where the first time OP is located, where the car is located, why the car needs to be titled in NY, or if it even is a Model A or similar vintage. Given the complete lack of information, I think we all have given enough help/wasted enough time here. I, personally, am going outside.

I am buying a 30 Blindback from someone in Ny and I live in Pa, so i called my local tag place and they said i need the transferable reg from Ny and i need to take a picture of the vin# and i will be good to go. A little easier than i thought.

Its easy if your transfereable registration matches your motor number..
If not its re stamp time...if your body is still on the frame..

I see your close by if u need a VIN verification I'm a PA inspection tech..

Hi Nick, I'm also in the process of transferring a NY registration in exchange for a PA title. You also need (or so I've been told by my Tag center) A MV-41 signed by a mechanic or notary. If you tow the car to the Tag center they will probably do the MV-41 for you, if you can't take the car there you will need to have a PA inspection mechanic or notary confirm (in person) the VIN on the car.
