Vehical wheel HI:
I got a question that I thought someone on here could answer for me and NO I'm NOT out to BUY one unless one comes along that's for sale then I would think about buying one but I'm really NOT in the market to buy one. And NO I don't have one for sale either but not long ago I was looking for the Original Caster Tools for the Model A's. And I was going through John Duby's Patents today and I found this Patent number ( US1982377 A ) and I was wondering what this all entailed more or less what is it for as it talks about the king pins and the tie rods as it talks about both of those in the description of this tool. So I thought that maybe someone would have one of these Original Tools made by the Duby Company that could show me close up pictures of the tool and explain to me as to what it's for and what it all does and how to use it. As I have never heard of a Tool like this before and as far as I have read on the Patent description that this Tool tells you if your Tie Rod is straight or not or your King Pins are bent as it tells you the center of gravity on the King Pins. Is the way I took it but that I could be way off on that and that's why I need the help and a explanation as to what this tool really all does as I don't have the foggiest idea as to what this would do or does as maybe this is the Tool that I was looking for all along and NOT the Caster Tools. Thanks Let Me Know Reggiedog |
Re: Vehical wheel Could you provide a link to that patent number? I couldn't find it under the number you gave. I did find a lot of other patents for front end gauges and tools filed by Duby. It's quite likely that most of these tools never hit the market for one reason or another: No demand for them, impractical, too hard to use, too expensive to produce, etc.
Also, are you looking for a tool to measure caster, or are you looking for a tool to adjust caster? They are separate, distinctly different tools. |
Re: Vehical wheel HI:
How I found it was on google patents search and I just typed in Duby patents and I just went down through them and yes I tried to put a link onto here and it wouldn't work it just kept coming back invalid link. So to answer your question is no I can't do that I wish I could it would make it allot easier for me but the name on the patent number is Vehicle Wheels if that helps. And NO I'm not looking for anything really I was just going through John Fabien Duby's patents this morning and found that and I thought it would or might be what I needed instead of the Caster Tools as this Patent measures the Gravity on the King Pins instead. But that's what I'm not sure of as it can also fix something on the Tie Rods also as the way I read it plus I don't even know if this is actually a Tool that was on the market like you said there's lots of reasons for that and I have no way of knowing that if it was or not. That's why I thought of asking on here I could at least find out if it was actually a Tool or if it wasn't as on the patent numbers it doesn't say if it was or not a Tool or not I'm hoping it was. Re: Vehical wheel Bob:
Is that the patent number with the "A" on it as there's another one that looks like a wheel as I can't bring what you sent me but without going back into the google patent search there's more then just one patent on there that's why it has to have the "A" on the end of the number. Reggiedog |
Re: Vehical wheel CASTER is like the WEIRD angle on a shopping cart wheel & keeps it going STRAIGHT.

Re: Vehical wheel "tie rod bent"
"king pins bent" "center of gravity on the king pins" ?????????????????????????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????? Paul in CT The first two you can do visually. Good luck with the 3rd one????????? |
Re: Vehical wheel That's what that Tool does is measure the center of gravity as far as I have read about it.
Go on Google Patents and type that Patent Number in and read it for yourself and that's what I'm trying to find out is how to use it and if anyone even has one of them or if this is a Tool that was never made as a lot of Tools where never made after they got the Patent on it. Reggiedog |
Re: Vehical wheel Really when I put a "A" on the end I get a different thing or Tool
|
Re: Vehical wheel You know I have read more on the description of this tool and it says it does tell you the center of gravity in relation from the King Pin bolts axis and the middle of the Tire Tread.
How that is suppose to do that is a mystery to me as I get the 3rd Diagram but NOT the first 2 Diagrams as they really don't make any sense to me as they have things on there that I can't even figure out what they are or suppose to be on a front end of a car or truck. |
Re: Vehical wheel Your nearest community college might have an automotive class. You might have some fun there learning about all these types of things.

Re: Vehical wheel That will never happen I've been on my back under enough cars and truck over the years and I'm getting to old to keep doing that as I'm still doing that but do you yourself know if this or about this tool and looking at the diagrams you can tell me what they are is one from the top or is both of them from the bottom ????.
As this tool is from the mid 30's so the stuff on those diagrams might be just looking from the bottom up but then again I could be wrong on that also cause I have no clue that's what I'm trying to figure out here and that's why the question was even put onto here to find that question out. And who knows this tool might not of even been made ever for who knows what reason that is another question that I'm trying to find out do you know I know I don't know that. Reggiedog |
Re: Vehical wheel But here's another question for you guy's does anyone have any of John F. Duby Tools other then the Alignment Tool it doesn't mater what it is as there is many of them as far as I can tell so far.
As I'm looking for the First and the Last Patent that John Duby did as I think I already have the first one but not sure on that as he Passed away in November of 1936 as I have the Funeral Notice of his Funeral in the Boston News Paper as I already know what year he was born. The first one as I think was the First patent was some kind of a Motor run by steam is what I think it was the first patent of his but I could be wrong on that one as I have been going through all of his patents but what I don't know is what was actually a tool and not a tool that was actually made. I don't have the time to read the patent in full at the moment but I will study it tomorrow and let you know what I take from it. |
Re: Vehical wheel Bob, From the little bit that the Patent shows up as I can't get that to stay for very long to actually see the patent that you are sending me but the number I can see as that stays and that I can see.
But tonight I will read as much as I can so when you are done reading it we can actually know what we both are talking about as I'm still looking at all of the other Patents that Duby had out at the time of his death as he died in 1936 and as far as I know his first Patent wasn't until after 1919 the year he got married. Re: Vehical wheel If you can't figure out the PURPOSE/or USE for a tool, DO YOU REALLY NEED IT????
Bill Simpleton |
Re: Vehical wheel That's NOT what I'm trying to find out I'm trying to find out for one if the tool was even made and yes how to use it but that's NOT the main reason what I'm trying to find out.
( If you read the other posts of mine on here you would know what I'm trying to do ) |
Re: Vehical wheel Quote:
Figure 6 and 7 are the old and new steering setup. He wants to have the king pins in line with the center of the tyre to stop shimmy or something like that. |
Re: Vehical wheel Quote:
So this patent is a dead end for what you're trying to do. Just take your car to a competent front end guy and find out exactly what your caster and camber settings are, then go from there if adjustment is needed. No need to dig up outdated alignment tools from 80 years ago! |
