sparton horn help Hi guys , I have a problem with the horn, need some help . Using Les Andrews book as a guide, I've rewound the field coils, 48 turns ea. one cw. and one cc. I installed new brushes, new insulating washers , soldered all the connections , oiled the pads, greesed the wheel, but the horn doesn't work. I'm using a battery charger with the high and start switch in the start position. even hooked up to the batt. I get the same results . THE MOTOR SPINS FREELY when the adjusting screw is backed all the way out ,as I turn the screw in to get the sound , the motor is slowing down.???I searched this site which had all good info. but nothing relating to this problem. before the rebuild the horn worked better, just not the right sound and now its worse. Can any one shed some light on this??? thanks THE HOOCH

Re: sparton horn help Try it on a battery rather than the charger.

Re: sparton horn help Sounds like a lot of horns out there. They will only work when you rev the engine and give it a little higher voltage. The motor is just not powerful enough the way it is. Your variables are the brushes and the windings. If everything is clean with no internal shorts, then it must be something in the windings. A touchy area. Find someone who knows a lot about windings. They should be able to help, or maybe someone on the Barn knows this area. Good luck.

Re: sparton horn help Is the wedge (chisel point) on the diaphram clocked correctly to the wavy washer?
The line of the chisel point needs to line up with the line of the wavy washer groove. It only takes a light contact of these two parts to make the right sound. |
Re: sparton horn help I had the same problem,i solderd thicker wires to _and+ and the problem was gone.
A former owner had replaced the wires for modern wires used in 12 volts,6 volts needs thicker wires. |

Re: sparton horn help If you haven't done this yet, with the horn motor running not contacting the ratchet wheel, use some fine sandpaper to polish the commutator. then clean the slots between the commutator segments.
