upholstery and windshield questions

31 pickup.... i am about ready to order the upholstery and seat springs for my truck. i did a little research on this site and only got bad news about cartouche.
i order most of my parts from mikes and like doing business with them and will soon order the springs and upholstery, but the posts have me worried. i'm pretty sure that mikes and all the other suppliers push the cartouche products for some reason. is lebaron the best way to go now?
i'm going to use the aluminum windshield frame, but would like to paint it before installing the glass. a couple of "a" buddeys were by yesterday and suggested having the supplier install the glass in the frame in case something isn't right and the glass wants to break. opinions please.

A Cartouch kit in your truck will work very nicely. It is easy to paint after the glass is installed if you mask carefully.

Re: upholstery and windshield questions

If you are a member of a local club I would encourage you to ask any of them if they have a Cartouch kit, this way you can see what you are going to get.

If that does not work put a post on the FB requesting photos of a Cartouch kit in a 31 pickup and make a decision from that.

My only experience with a Cartouch interior was with helping one of our club members remove an older LeBaron Bonney interior from a 1931 Slant Window 160B and replacing it with a Cartouch kit. If it was my car I would have left the LeBaron Bonney kit in!!

another question.... are everybody's seat springs the same? i'm sold on going with lb or classtique. these places say their kits fit snyder seat springs, so i am wondering if other vendors have the same spring. as i have stated i like dealing with mikes, they have been nice to work with and i get orders in one or two days, but don't want to get seat covers and springs that don't match.

Re: upholstery and windshield questions

Snyders is the manufacturer of the seat springs.

Have had good luck with Snyders springs.

I had to modify snyders springs to fit, my metal frame was to different. Yes i called them and no joy, I ended up modifying their spring frame to fit. Maybe not normal, as my tudor was pieced together ? being a late 31 manufactured in Nov! Some times you have to make things work.

Re: upholstery and windshield questions

My truck came with the Lebaron kit and the seat and backrest springs were new and already covered. I was very pleased with everything. One thing I've noticed in some pickups is that the seats are covered in a smooth material. Mine are kinda pebbly and I much prefer them over them the smooth as my arse seems to stay in place much better.

The Cartouch kit for my 30 Tudor is great, when in just fine.
I'm rebuilding a 1930 $500 car... not a Rolls, it's fine, looks the same as the pictures in the Judge Standard manual. my car is Fun driver, if Judged... I' get -500 pts. from 15 ft it looks stock.

I ordered a classtique kit for my 1930 deluxe roadster, it is a numbers matching car and was very original. I myself would not order another one from them as the fit was not to my liking.

I used Classtique in my 1930 Coupe. Way back when..

Problem today is that Le Barron Bonney was sold and the old timers who knew how to make stuff right are gone. Think Classtique got sold too, or the great lady who did upholstery is no longer there.

LB is probably the best there is..

Re: upholstery and windshield questions

I used a Lebanon Bonney kit in my 31 PU with Snyder springs. It fit very well. Keep in mind that the seat spring for an indented firewall cab is not the same as the earlier flat firewall springs.

Re: upholstery and windshield questions

Go to my profile, then to my album, "My A". It shows how I solved these problems. First, My spring! I used and old mattress spring that just happened to be the exact same width as the front spring. Just lop off a piece and duplicate the front of the spring. You will also have make an "Outrigger" ( I don't know the correct name of this piece) out of 1/4" steel rod. It's all in the pictures. The coils are smaller and there are more of them so there fore the new spring is slightly more rigid. Since people weigh a little more today than in 1930, this may be a good thing!
I'm assuming your seat wood is good. If not, it is easy enough to duplicate. I have duplicated most of mine so far at a considerable savings.
I don't know what fabric that Ford used in their pickups but why not try a local seat upholsterer and see what they would charge. In my Town Sedan, they only used Bedford Cord and Mohair. Good luck!

Re: upholstery and windshield questions

I am confused''' One post says that Snyders makes the springs that Mikes and others buy and the nest says that Snyders do not fit but Mikes does. What am I missing???

J Franklin 01-18-2017 05:21 PM

Re: upholstery and windshield questions

"Does not fit" doesn't necessarily mean it is the springs fault. It could be the seat frame, wrong spring for the year/model car, or past modifications causing problems.

I ordered a roadster top from LB, David Costello, the customer service was terrible!!! If I ever order from them again I will make sure I get a different rep.
