Brake riveter
 

The man (Hine), who lived on the farm before me, built this large riveter. I would like to know if this is for doing brake linings. Would the small riveter also work ? Drill press is just something else he built. Thanks Pat

The hand stuff works, but some get tiring after doing a few shoes. May work better with 2 people.

We have a kick riveter that does a wonderful job. Since you are using your foot you do not get so tired. I used one of the hand riveters like you have pictured to the right and found it takes more time then the foot kind.

With the foot powered kick riveting you can hold with both hands and keep the lining down better (use clamps too). I also found you can do some other A rivets like the hood side parts.

I know the riveter we have the link at the top provides for some extra pressure as the link comes up straight. So there may be tighter riveting with them too.

Of course, quality control is important with riveting. Closely inspecting each rivet after setting. As long as the rivet is well set any tool works.

The last picture is actually for use on leather or other heavy material.

Mike can you tell, on the first and second picture, what engine those connecting rods came off ?

I would guess the rods are from a model T ford. They were plentyful back then, and the base of the drill press looks like a model T driveshaft coupling clamshell.
When I was in the Air Force in the 60's, I was for a while stationed in Oregon, where I met a guy who had a fleet of antique cars. He had made a complete machine shop from old car parts, mostly model T parts. He had a drill press, a shaper, a unique vise that would conform to odd shapes, and other stuff I cant remember. I drove his model T truck to California for a parade.

Thank you for the information and never 2 many cars. Never even thought about the base being an auto part !! This makes me want to put them on display instead of using them, but then I would have to buy more tools:D. This site has so many great stories and learning adventures in history everyday. Thank you so much for "yours" 2manycars !! -12* in Minnesota, but I'm going to the shop after reading some more posts and admire my junk even more today:roll eyes:. Yes, that is Jim in the derby and me looking very young.

Seven degrees here this morning,a nd six inches of snow. Just got done blowing out the neighborhood with my John Deere.
