oil pan differences

I am just in the progress of putting together a list of all my stored parts that came with the truck I just brought home last fall. I have several oil pans, some early 28, some later ones. I've looked through the judging standards (old version) and seen when changes were made (omition of the bottom cleanout, drain holes in the baffle plate) I was just wondering how much (if any) the few changes made to just the oil pan helped to lenghthen engine life back in the day, and if anyone has any insight as to why certain changes were made, such as why omit the bottom cleanout.

bottom clean out is simple: not needed and extra steps in the stamping/machining process that took time and materials.

Drain holes - I would say majority of the people back then didnt drive thier cars much (not anywhere near like today) so they sat and well drained the oil out of the baffle thru the holes. After a few revolutions especially when cold it would kick alot of the oil out of the baffle thus dryish bearings before it could refill. That and extra stamping step thats not needed.

Least those are my guesses.

The oil wells in the dip tray better not have drain holes, or you'll have dry starts for the rods. I've seen holes drilled by some owner in the upper flat surface, but I don't like that idea either. None of my dip trays have holes.

Yes, the holes are on the high flat area, The things one finds with 80 year old items. I only have the one pan with it but whoever did it made a nice job as I truly thought it was factory, thanks for shedding some light Tom

I think some later pans were factory with holes on the flat, but I'm not sure if any late Model A's were included in that change. Vince or Marco would likely know the answer to that.
