slant window header installation questions
 

I'm presently working on my Victoria header install and wondering if anyone could possibly assist me with some information. The wood in my header was non-existent from sitting out with no roof and in the bush for so many years. I am a member of the Victoria Association having purchased all the past Bustle newsletters and the two books offered by the association. I am in need of some pictures or installation ideas on installing the steel portion of the header cover. A gentleman from the U.S.A. sent me up his old wood header to which I am very grateful. I was able to make an almost exact copy of and have temporarily installed it on the steel framework. The wood header has approx. a 17 degree angle which I copied exactly. this along with another angled piece is now attached to the back of the wood header. this last piece goes on with seven flathead wood screws. My questions are

1. the metal header has slotted holes at the top that would fasten to the header - but where exactly does it attach to ?

does the edge of the metal header at the top line up ? at the middle of the two pieces ? any pics available ?

2. The bottom of my metal header was totally rusted out and I dont know how deep it should be - I think it should match up with the bottom of the steel angled piece which the wood header attaches to - is that correct ?

3. If it does match up - is there supposed to be a gap ?

4. if it does match up - does the windshield hinge attach to the metal or is there some wood or other material sandwiched in between ?
5. there is also a wood piece that attaches to the front of the header, how thich is that piece ?

Does the bottom of the metal header match up at same level with the angled steel bar that runs across to the pillars ?
Your pics give me a good idea of the steel headers angle, I'll go in my shop and see how it all fits at that angle.
I had done some extensive welding trying to repair the bottom edge of the steel header but I think it was not done right as now it doesnt line up at the bottom (too short)

My Victoria body is at the body shop so I can't get to it today. I will take more detailed pictures for you tomorrow. Art

Here are a few more pictures I have on hand. The body is at the body shop. I will take some more pictures of the inside angle brackets tomorrow. The pictures with the tape measure was to show the door opening dimension after the doors were aligned with the proper gaps. I can't figure out how to orient those last two. Art

If we look at Art's last post #7, (last or bottom picture) we can see the metal angled piece which the wood header is fastened to, notice there is a gap between the other piece of metal - Is that metal piece the very bottom of the metal cover ?

Yes, that is the bottom of the metal header. The camera angle makes the gap look bigger than it is. The gap is only about 1/8" inch. I believe the metal woodgrained header trim or windshield hinge covers it.

Tom, I just went to the shop to look at that gap. The bottom of my metal header has not been nailed to the header yet, when it is it will close that gap. Here is a better picture.

thats exactly what I was looking for. If you could take two measurements for me because I have to make the 90 deg. bend portion of the cover.
1. going from the top of the metal cover going downward to the lip where the metal bends inward - could you measure from the bottom of that lip to the very bottom of the cover (should be approx. 5/8 - 3/4 inch I think)
2. the last measurement is the under bend (should be roughly the same)

Tom, 1/2"x3/4" and there should be no gap between the two metal pieces or the windshield hinge and interior woodgrained trim piece holes wont line up.
