You can use any thing you want but it's not a direct bolt in. The 48 thru 52 steering gears are decent enough and available enough that I don't think I would modify it for the F100 box. The F1 box may just need a new worm gear, sector roller, or bearings. The mod can be done though if you want to go through the extra work. Parts for the Gemmer II box are readily available since they were used clear back to 1937.

What rotorwrench said, the later boxes are larger and change the position of the column.

Pitman arm is different. Length is different. Angle of the mounting flange is different. Bolt pattern is different. New parts for your stock box is easier to replace then the work to make the F100 work. Plus the postion of the worm means cutting the floor board cover

I don't have a original box. I was told that using a later box would make the driveability better. not sure if this is true or worth doing modifications randy

These pictures might help. Smaller box is '49 F-1 - larger a '55 box.
'49 used splines for pitman arm - '53-'55 uses pinch bolt.
You can see the different mounting patterns.

48 to 52 are the same. Just locate the right one . Might even find one good enough to just install

There seems to be allot of steering box upgrades lateyl here on the barn. Most of them to older ford car/pickups. I was wondering if any of you ever considered the Saginaw 525. I think you can buy an adapter plate for it. I also use the 70/80's GM column, makes for easy brake and direction lights.. I do think the results are better steering. I also think theElectric PS is the cheapest and easiest way to go. Not for the purest tho.
