Another Trans Question
 

My 36 Phaeton, which we think is all original (older restoration) pops out of second gear when slowing down in gear. On acceleration, no problem, just when slowing down. I can hold it in gear manually. 1st and third are fine. I don't mind double clutching. Should I just live with it until it needs major work?

Hi Everyone. Oakhurst, My Phaeton did it when I got it too! Classic worn transmission. Sent mine to CharlieNY for his magic. Problem gone.

You can live with it . . . and it will probably be just fine for many miles, or you can have the transmission rebuilt and "usually" that will fix it. Many of the old dirt track racers used to have a steel "hook" on their dash, specifically used to HOLD the transmission in 2nd - so this issue has been around for many years. LOL

With that said, it depends WHO rebuilds it, what parts go into it and how much they know about these specific trans and their nuances. I just rebuilt a 39 Box with 25T Zephyr gears and had CharlieNY do some specialized work on the bushing inside of 2nd gear - he knows his stuff and is a solid Dude.

Deceleration causes a backlash in the main shaft/input shaft/synchronizer fit. If there is a lot of wear on any of the parts it there, it can put a tweek on things and cause it to disengage. There are other things that can cause it too like too much end play with any of the shafts and there individual components. A worn thrust washer and face on the counter shaft cluster can cause problems. It is a symptom of the need for a through inspection and renewal of all excesively worn or broken parts.

Thanks for all your responses. It is as I expected, probably general wear. We will live with it until it finally needs repair. Any one in Kalifornia you recommend?

I just rebuilt my '38 transmission that was doing the exact same thing, along with balky shifting. I had a '41 commercial with the double detent tower and later synchronizer so I combined enough parts to make one later style transmission. I was intimidated by the project at first. With tips from the 'Barn, Van Pelt's book and parts, it was actually very simple. I even sealed the leaky shafts with tips found here on the 'Barn.

If and when I rebuild the trans, should i update it? I recall being told that the 39 has better syncros and I could still use the old case?

That's all true scoop. Do yourself a favor and order MacVP's trans book........Sooooo much info, and Mac is the trans guru. He has all the GOOD parts, too. DD
