Looking at the worm gear on my 30 tudor to replace i assume it will go on either way or is it directional?

You guessed it! The new one has to be fitted. I wound up filing it down a little and tapping the the shaft a putting a piece of ready rod in the threaded rod and screwing a nut and large washer to pull it down into place. This was four days after I started the job with a large lead hammer and a propane torch. BIG PITA!

I've used that method 3 times and had great sucess. Quick and easy. I once bent a shaft trying to drive one on with a brass sledge.

Mitch your method is what i am using but this new gear is really galling the shaft bad i know it should be tight but not this tight and yes i did line up the key part of the gear on the shaft and got it started real good also it is the last inch that does not want to go.
