Removing the "tempered" etching from glass
 

I had a rear window glass made for my pickup and had it tempered. Unfortunately the glass tempering place etched a label on the lower corner of the glass. The fingerprints and smears around the etching is not a problem, just the etched lettering. I don't want the etching on the glass. Maybe they have to do it by law. Does anyone know how to remove the etching - some compound? If the glass is slightly wavy after the etching is removed, that's OK.

I'M not sure about your state, but in California you have you glass labeled.
There is a requirement that all vehicle glass be a safety glass of some kind.
That label is your proof. I California a glass shop is required by law to install safety glass, with the label showing. Granted it's not something that is checked very
often, until you end up in court.

Just a late after thought, maybe if the laminates are visible you don't need a label??

Y blockhead,,,, Maybe the label is not required in CO. Just as a thought keep Berts invoice just in case.

You always tell them it is for a picture frame.

If it is car glass it needs to be marked. Least that was what I was told once.

Rusty, if the etching was done with acid, try some clear nail polish over the area. A very light coat. Maybe even dilute the clear lacquer with some thinner so that it flows easily into just the etching. That might make it disappear or be much less noticeable.

You may be able to remove some or most of it with cerium oxide, water, and a felt pad.

Technically, DOT requires safety glass in all vehicles and the glass to be marked with a visible DOT number (identifying the manufacturer of the part). Most flat glass tempering plants are not "certified" to mark the glass with a DOT number and will mark it with an architectural certification.

Most tempering plants will produce tempered glass with "no logo" if you ask. Some plants are sticklers and put a logo on all their glass.

In your case, once you remove the logo, chances are very slim you will have a problem with the "Law". However, there is no logo to prove it is tempered if needed for car club tours, events, or shows.

Around here, we're just happy to have un-busted, non-fogged glass in the A Model Ford windows. The windshield in our rambling wreck 31' Tudor sedan has a logo with a 1942 date on it. Put the WW2 "B" gasoline ration sticker right near the period windshield etching. We're all set to car pool the gang for the daily trip down to the war plant to build them bombers. Keep em' flying!

Thanks for the responses. I might try some cerium oxide paste (thanks Phred) a see if it reduces the etching.
