Removing Timing Gear Cover
 

I am having a timing issue and I am trying to remove the cover to check the gear alignment. It is an early 28 tudor with solid front motor mounts. I have all the bolts removed and was wondering if the cover will come straight up enough to clear the mount brackets or does it need to come forward. If it needs to come forward I will have remove the top radiator hose and maybe loosen the rear motor mounts as the motor still seems solid with just the front bolts removed.

Yes, take the top hose off, take the rear mount bolts out & jack up the oil pan with a board under it.. You also have to disconnect the exhaust from muffler pipe. Don't forget to remove the throttle Assy. as it will hit the fire wall..

And don't forget about the "hidden" front cover bolt inside the recess next to the driver's side motor mount arm! The first time I tried to remove that cover, I didn't know about that bolt tucked away inside a cave. I removed all the others (including the oil pan bolts underneath), but could only pry the cover forward a little bit along the top. Using a pry bar, I forced the timing gear cover outward until it snapped. Only then did I discover the hidden bolt! This was in 1968 when repair and restoration manuals for the Model A were either non-existent or as good as worthless. NONE of them talked about that bolt. You guys coming into the hobby in the last 15-20 years don't know how good you have it in regards to printed matter and on-line help to repair your Model A!

I have all the bolts out except the hidden bolt. I have not been able to raise the front of the engine enough to access it yet. I have the rear motor mount bolts loose and thought that would be enough but it won't budge.

Loose wont do it, They have to be out !!.. I take it you have the two front ones from the solid mount out ??..

You can do it by leaving two of the rear motor mount bolts in but slackened off . It does not matter which two you leave in as long as it is the same both sides. The motor will pivot as you lift it . Even if slacked with all bolts in you run the risk of cracking the flywheel housing .

Thanks for the advice. I removed the rear motor mount bolts and was able to get the timing cover removed.

Someone mentioned that "hidden" bolt. If it's forgotten on re-assembly, it'll LEAK OIL, like a SIEVE!

I think I remember that the 1930 parts book calls for 6 of the special oval head bolts and that the 7th is not listed. Don't have the book here now to check. Check it out.
