Re: Brakes 34 ford

I like the woven ones . I have used molded ones and they did not stop as good . Noticeable difference .

Re: Brakes 34 ford

I run woven linings on both my '34 and '37 with excellent stopping results. My '34 came equipped with molded linings and its braking was terrible back then. Switching to woven linings on cars with mechanical brakes is the only way to go IMO....

Re: Brakes 34 ford

There was a reason why Ford originally used woven linings with mechanical brakes.

just completed a 36 with flathead teds floaters and woven linings, it will out stop my 40 with hydraulics and molded linings. will slide all 4 tires if you jump on it!!

Re: Brakes 34 ford

.Over here woven or moulded can both be bonded on its all about the # code ,There is several grey material s that you can choose from in the moulded range ,It has been pointed out that some do not grip very well but if you get the correct soft one(commonly used on Model As ) it will work well ,some woven ones have wire in them that are quiet hard on the drums .Ted

PS Looks like Alan and I was typing at the same time

Re: Brakes 34 ford

My stock Vicky and roadster with stock mechanicals and woven linings stop better than my Phaeton and 3-W with '40 brakes and molded linings. They all stop well but the woven linings take less effort and stop more efficiently.
I don't put that many miles on the cars so having them wear out a little more often isn't an issue with me. If they do however I will replace with woven linings.

Re: Brakes 34 ford

The NORS woven linings sometimes contained brass wire which is not hard on drums.

The molded linings were first used by Ford in 1940 and Ford identified the cars with a painted "M" on the backing plates. I have instructions for an aftermarket floater kit for the 35-38 Ford that instruct the use of molded linings with the use of their floaters.

Here is a pic of mine. Easy to do. Bought a rivet punch from airplane supply & linings from a ford vender. Cleaned the shoe & used some contact cement & then riveted the lining on. Get your shoes arced to the drum if possible. Take your time & safe driving. Oh make sure you have bright stop lights also. I'm looking at installing some LED 3rd brake light like I have on the 32. Trouble is it is 12V & I need 6V.
Whizzer I hope you don't mind the of subject but I think it all ties in.
B-O-B on the mend.:)

My car came with this exact kit. I followed the instructions and installed molded linings on the shoes. Hope this is the right course of action! It stops pretty well, straight and sure.

Re: Brakes 34 ford

You can use woven or moulded but if you get the wrong moulded one eg for hydraulics brakes they wont work so good .If the san José guy can guarantee then use them ,Not sure about Macs ones .But if in dought use woven
To Bob Macs do a high stop led called Brake lighter TL6 6volt ,can flash on one side doubles as a turn .Ted

Re: Brakes 34 ford

I put woven ones on my 33 a few years ago, and they stop better than the old molded ones I took out.
