Question about spraying clear lacquer

I started to spray some clear lacquer on one of my trucks today with my conventional HLVP sprayer and the paint started coming out like tiny confetti or cobwebs. It sprayed OK last month using the same paint and lacquer thinner. Temperature is about the same as before so I either have bad paint or something is wrong with my paint gun, right?
I cleaned the gun good, or so I thought. I strained everything and used a pickup tube filter.
I added more thinner and it improved but still didn't come out of the gun as smooth as before.
Any ideas about what I am doing wrong? I haven't painted a car in years and I am probably forgetting something simple.

Re: Question about spraying clear lacquer

If everything is the same as last used, you may have a blockage in your gun from not enough cleaning last time.

Check all the holes under spray cap.

But generally cobwebs is just not enough thinners.

Thanks. I mixed it 2:1 but I may try a batch with more thinner to see if I get a better flow. The black I sprayed did flow better, perhaps the clear was a thicker paint initially.

Re: Question about spraying clear lacquer

that is how we used to paint cob webs on custom paint jobs . just ad more thinner until it lays out good for you on a test panel.

suggest always test shoot on a piece of cardboard until you get your adjustments and mix just right

Re: Question about spraying clear lacquer

Thin the lacquer a little more and increase your air pressure by 5 lbs. see if that helps.

Re: Question about spraying clear lacquer

Having sprayed clear lacquer many times , I always use a viscosity cup and thin so it empties cup in 20 seconds . works for tinted as well.
