Re: Value Model B blaock NOS Do a bunch of dimensional investigation! B's used in USA production had no serial on block. The DR # is not a Ford serial...may well be the ID of a rebuilder. Measure everything and see what diameters are standard. You may have just very clean parts ready for assembly but not new.

Re: Value Model B blaock NOS Be careful - some sellers interpet NOS to mean : No Obligation Sucker, while others interpret NOS as Not Old Stock. It is getting increasingly more difficult to actually find NOS meaning New Old Stock.

Re: Value Model B blaock NOS It is not entirely impossible that living in Southern California you have a NOS Model B block. I have one and have heard of two others. Ford Parts Obsolete uncovered a warehouse in Poland with several hundred of them (they were all in pieces) in the sixties and shipped them over. They were intended as engines for Russian military vehicles.

Re: Value Model B blaock NOS The DR number was an early California DMV/CHP version of the now CA Tag, when no other number was found on the vehicle or had no paper work.
The pistons look like early Jahns pistons and look used. I would measure the block, crank and cams to see if they are used or not. If it is all NOS its worth a whole lot, if used it's just worth a lot. |
Re: Value Model B blaock NOS To get the big money you need to clean them up and measure.
If I were buying I would want to see that all the journals are 100% rust free and new. I would want to know the bore sizes and so on to be sure of two things. First off is it really new. Second, make sure it was not a factory oops. Sometimes a part with issues got into the parts stream. Also some of the later production from the 40's were not built to the best standards like production era parts. So if you want the big bucks, which new will command a premium, you need to clean and measure. |
Re: Value Model B blaock NOS Nos crankshafts don't have dowell pins in the flywheel flange, cam gears or keys---I have a NOS A crank, have seen NOS B cranks,
|
Re: Value Model B blaock NOS The 3rd. photo is 8 pistons,..they are Jahn's pistons,..cast versions. They look used by
the "caramel" on the inside, the pins also look used... |
Re: Value Model B blaock NOS It is also a diamond block, usually a good thing. I've seen NOS blocks with asking prices of over $1,000. They were still in cosmoline. Russian blocks are easily identifiable by their rough castings and large insignia (?) on the left side.

Re: Value Model B blaock NOS I have a Model A Block and pink slip that has a DR number and a 1938 Harley with a
DR number on the cases and pink slip. So California did use DR numbers. These are also not the first I have seen. |
Re: Value Model B blaock NOS DRF = Department Registry File. CA has used DRF since the '50's that I know of. Possibly earlier it was only DR.
|
Re: Value Model B blaock NOS That makes sense the 1938 Harley with the DR number on it had been last registered in 1946. So maybe it was DR then DRF or someone didn't put the F at the end.
