1932 steering box removal from car.
 

I'm pretty sure I know the answer, but will ask anyway.

I want to remove my steering box from the car and was hoping to do so without removing the engine. I looking and looked but I can't see how I can do so. It looks like the sector shaft won't allow the box to clear the chassis before the box hits the motor. Body is on too I should say.

So has anyone done this, is there a trick I can't see?

'32 with an 8BA in it.

You should be able to remove it if you first remove the exhaust manifold on the left side and rotate it downward, assuming that you do not have engine splash pans, in which case the splash pan would also have to be removed.

I will take some photos but I did rotate the column towards the floor, however the box was hitting the block before the sector shaft was clear of the chassis. I really don't want to have to pull the motor and trans to get it out. I'm planning on doing the 15:1 modification to the box. However if I can't get it out easy I might wait till next winter ( June) to do this as I would like to drive the car this summer.

It will come out. The exhaust manifold and the floor boards must be removed. I disconnect the clutch linkage and pull the pedal back. I suggest wraping the column with cardboard to prevent having to repaint.
The spindles sometimes drag on the axle. They hang from the top of the king pins and any wear on the top of the spindle will let the spindle move up and rub on the bottom of the axle and cause hard steering. Check for clearance between the bottom of the axle and the top of the lower boss on the spindle with weight on the wheel.

Does anyone have a photo of the spacer #68-3598 I've looked at exploded views of steering setups and cant see it, also google doesnt bring anything up. Wishing to purchase this as per the 32 books recommendation to improve steering. Andy, I will check the front end , but the spindles were fitted with new bushings and kingpins about 12 months ago.

I went and looked up that part number. It is for the sector shaft needle bearings used only in the 1936 steering boxes. It won't work with any sector except the 36 one. The needle bearing require an extremely hard sector to tolerate the high contact loads generated by the needle bearings. They also do nothing.
If the person installing your king pins did not understand that they are a completeiy different animal than anything else, you may find that they are dragging. The axle hangs on the king pin and the roller bearing takes the load from the king pin. The bearing does not directly support the load from the axle like the later designs.

I just pulled my 32 pickup box back out to update to needle bearings. I had to remove the exhaust manifold , lower seat cushion , and floor boards.
